PostFri Apr 29, 11 3:42 pm    CGKA - Sandbar Clean Up - Sat May7th 9am@Sndbr Prkng Lt Reply with quote

The CGKA is working closely with the US Corp of Engineers and the Port of Hood River to coordinate a low water draw to occur on the morning of Saturday May 7th to allow us to properly access the full Hood River Sandbar for a clean up work party.

The intention of this years clean up will be to clear any debris that appears to be hazardous to either kites or kiteboarders, as well as any large log/debris removal along the shoreline.

Ideally we are restricted to clearing only debris that is at or above the waterline, but I think we can make strategic judgement calls on the day of the clean up as to what is important to remove and what is okay to stay.

The earlier clean up date is due to the fact that we actually have over 140% snowpack, the Corps is expecting a very wet Spring Season, and they also have an agreement with the Federated Tribes to allow a strong highwater run off through out May and June for fishing needs.

We are seeking volunteers who are willing to come out on Saturday to help with this clean up. All attendees are volunteers who are participating of there own choice and desires (sorry, but gotta cover the liability side).

Since the Sandbar is in need of only some moderate debris clearance, we will attempt to complete our clean up by noon (also the water will be back up by noon anyways) and we will only be utilizing no more than (2) 4x4 trucks.
The intention is to be low impact with solid results.
There will be no burning of materials during this clean up.

Here are the details for the Sandbar Clean up

When : Sat May 7 – from (8?)9am-12noon
Where – Meet at the Sandbar Parking Lot
Who – YOU!!!
What to bring – See below
Here is a basic list of items that I think we will likely want to have :
(2) 4x4 Trucks – I have one, we could use another to allow for two parties to be working at the same time
(2-4) Chainsaws – for cutting down oversized logs
(3-4 ) Webbing tow straps – for towing oversized logs
(6-9) Shovels – for digging out logs
Jetski? – possibly for towing off floater logs?

Any other thoughts or recommendations?

Feel free to email (pepi at gorge.net) or PM me.

Thank you

Wait? What? Did someone say DONUTS!? I will try to my best to get out there. Mothers day weekend might make it a little tough. If any of you haven't had any ACME donuts yet, they are awesome.

Looks like it's game on!

Dave and I will have the trucks, Mark's got cable and we have a good crew of people who have been emailing me and dropping by the shop to indicate that they'll be helping out.

We are also coordinating with the CGWA and local fishermen who will be coordinating clean ups all along the waterfront from the Event Site over to the Hook.

See you all Saturday. Bring shovel, ropes and muscle!

Looking for Donut shuttle on Sat. a.m. I can't get there myself but if someone can pickup donuts and coffee give me a call.
I can have them ready as early as 7:30. I could meet someone at say 205 and 84 if that helps, or come to my tasty donut emporium and pick them up and I'll send you off full of caffeine and donuts.
Cheers, Kevin

When the water rises most valuable property is high and dry.

Think before you remove the features that PREVENT the sand from eroding. Help nature BUILD the sandbar HIGHER by stopping wind and water erosion.

Think Snow fence not scrape and burn.
Large logs should be buried to create substrate footing for wind breaks. Instead of denuding the beach it is wise to situate large logs to remain buried under drifted sand. Granted, shoveling of sand onto the logs is not as fun as a 4x4’s, tow straps, chain saws, beer and fire arms,

Since the last Hood River Flood wind and water erosion has drastically reduced the size of the sand bar. Notice the REMAINING outline of the sandbar has “for some magical reason” a floor plan secured by prominent natural anchoring features. These natural anchors are large buried root balls and logs that snagged round otherwise rolling rocks.

Let’s take a hint from nature.

Good points Kmun.

Also, it makes sense to not cut any live plants. I noticed a few trees starting to grow along with native shrubs. Unless we have a permit from the State to remove live plants, we can not touch the live stuff.
