From my experience... Sketchy! I'm sure some folks on here have some better knowledge than I do, but when I tried everywhere was a little, uneasy. The locals don't seem to take to kindly to outside campers. I was warned by a police officer one night to "watch out, cuz you gonna get robbed brudah". My suggestion is to get a place to share with some folks. My 2cents.

Spaceracer,

If you bring a hot batch of "ICE" I'm sure you'll fit right in. I'd save the tent camping for the Hana side. Look into the hostel scene, if your trying to go LB.

You can find a place in Kehei for $50 a night. What r u thinkin? Those local boyz will eat you alive. Ever see a real Hawaiian native? Go with a couple of friends & split a safe place.

My friend Russ is renting vans for $150 a week there. PM me if you need the contact.

Stay safe...brudah.

Grumpy bombs? That's a new one. Funny. I didn't mean for him to stay in the van - He will need a rig when he is there. Just trying to help keep his expenses down.

Dude, some people just take a shit right in the line up, No kidding. I had a special spot in the trees that I used before paddling out each morning, leaves work quite nicely.

It's funny that everyone is scared of the native Hawaiians, only 5% of people in Hawaii are native Hawaiian. You're just perpetuating the b.s. Everyone loves Hawaii. Everyone wants to live there. Even the native people. Just think up ways to bring the Aloha... Always smile, don't get in the way, share your space on the water, share your beer... Share.

Though, My advice: Stone's Place Maui. Jason and Ruthie Stone are fucking awesome. The place is awesome, quiet, has a great view, a big ass yard, an awesome modified webber BBQ (thanks to yours truly), and it's 15 minutes away from Ho'okipa, 20 to kitebeach. Katie and I rented from them for 3 months. Tell them Forrest sent you!

If somebody told me they were planning to be in Portland for a month and wanted advice about camping on the banks of the Willamette I would say 'you gonna get robbed bruda'. Think of it that way. Hawaiians are nice just like Oregonians. You just have to pick your spots well. Needles and missing teeth are signs of NOT picking your spot well. Same as here.

check craigslist for places to stay too, I stayed for 8 days with a buddy for $300! At $150/person you can't beat it, we had kitchen to cook in, shower, and a place to sleep.

Anyone want to go to maui May 26-31? let me know! It will be cheap

There are outdoor showers and bathrooms at the kitebeach but I still dont think I would camp there.

Hit up Forrest suggestion the Stone's place is cheap and nice.

Native Hawaiians are not the mean ones. It's the Mokes and BlahLahs.
Plenty of good placed to sleep in the jungle up country. I used to sleep in a cave near long cave in the crater but thats sort of a no no. Hostels are the cheapest if you dont mind sharing with smelly B.O. dudes ....

State campgrounds that require reservations are pretty safe. "pretty safe" being take all valuables with you and don't leave them in the campgrounds. Www.hawaiistateparks.org. Often hawaii state parks are closed wed-thurs.

I recently camped on Oahu and all was good. Have fun!
