Thu Aug 06, 09 10:51 am Wyoming kiting? |
|
|
Heading to WY to rustle some cattle, and want to get a little kiteboarding in too! Googled for spots in WY but came up empty handed (all snowkiting spots), but could just be my lack of computer skills?
Anyone out there ever kiteboard in WY?
Do u have any recommendations?

Don't know any spots, but there has to be some. Every time I drove through Eastern Wyoming--I used to live in South Dakota--the wind was blowing West @ 30 - 40 knots. First time I drove through there in the Spring it was W@50-60 knots. Winter, Summer, whatever. It's ALWAYS windy there. If no one here knows any spots there has to be a midwest forum you could hit?

UW Alumni here... !
Hattie can be good.. got my ass handed to me on an X2 back in the day..
Also if you are up in Jackson area I've seen people out on Jackson Lake...
I also went to a res. by Vedavoo(NE of Laramie) and it was good too.. lighwind on my LF Flight Kite though...
Like Nak said, it blows...always has, always will...So bring the gear, check the wind, obsticals, hazards, launch and landing,.... and let er' rip...

Lake McConaughy, NE (near Ogallala, NE) is about 2 1/2 hrs east of Cheyenne where the North Platte and South Platte Rivers converge. Great sand beaches, camping on the beach, and lots of wind especially the afternoon storms coming off of the Rockies. We used to windsurf and Hobie there all the time way back when....
Also Lake Hattie can crank.

Wyoming is windy,,,
just hard to find water.
Sulphur Creek Reservoir 10 miles south of Evanstonhas been a mainstay for Utah windsurfers for years,
not a very kite friendly place, but OK.
Flaming Gorge reservoir south of Rock Springs is huge, and windy.
Big Sandy, north of Rock Springs is friendly, and lonely.
Buffalo Bill Reservoir near Cody can be like a mini Gorge.
I'm sure some of the Jackson guys will also chime in.
Where in Wyoming are you heading to?

There's spots, try and grab a copy of the latest windsport mag, I realize this is a windsurfing mag but there's an article about sailing out around jackson hole which I would imagine be somewhat kiteable

Lived in Jackson and kited a few times in Alpine above the dam on the Snake. Also you can kite near Pinedale on the the Big Piney Res. Lake Mconahay (not spelled right) works but it's not great and subject to t-storms that can be violent and is far from WY.

I'm heading to Daniel, which is near Pinedale.
...so, Brass...thank you kindly! I will absolutely check out Big Piney Reservoir.
I had planned to check out Jackson Lake as I will be near the resort briefly, honestly was surprised to not hear/or find much about kiteboarding in that area, as it is a destination point for many. I had figured that maybe kiting was against Forest Svc./Park rules?
Thanks you guys! I'll check out the magazine, Google Earth, and a basic map again, to see if i have enough time to drive to some of these places without getting my own head slaughtered for seeking respite in the wind rather than with the cattle!

One thing to keep in mind coming from the NW... Riders here tend not to respect thunderstorms as much as they should, because they tend to be far less severe in the NW. Not so in Wyoming. They will kick your ass and more. Failing to respect a thunderhead there could be a fatal mistake. Literally.
That said, have fun!

The place you want to go is definitely Big Sandy. Large beaches, beautiful scenery and howling wind! Drive around to the east side of the lake and park on one of the beaches. Try not to disturb the herd of wild horses that hangs out there. The JH crew will probably be there this weekend. PM me or look for the Ozone kites.
