Last week I finished putting oil injection back on my 98 Yamaha. (it was pre-mix) I learned a couple of things that should be interesting to you if you have a 2 stroker...
It seems like the main cause of engine failure on the old 2 strokers is the oil injection lines getting stiff and falling off the nipple. Also, Yamaha uses a cable tie to clamp the lines which is another source of failure. Not sure what the other makes use...
If you have a 2 stroke jetski, you REALLY should check your oil lines. If one line falls off your only warning will be the catastrophic failure of that cylinder. Think seriously about replacing the lines and upgrading the hose clamps to Oetiker stepless crimp on stainless steel clamps.
Just a thought. |

No worries Nicole! The lines should be soft & flexible... If you change the lines I have a crimping tool you can use for the Oetiker clamps. The clamps themselves are pretty cheap, the tool is about $20 - $40. Not sure where you can buy the clamps in town, I get mine online |

The very FIRST thing I do with my new 2 stroke machines (sleds, jetski and seadoo) is remove the oil injection, remove the oil pump and install a block off plate. The convinience of not needing to mix the oil is not worth the cost of a breakdown in the middle of nowhere...Just my two cents... _________________ It's all good |

A lot of people feel that way. I re-installed the oil injection because I was tired of the spark plugs loading up with oil, and then the waverunner not wanting to start. Using the waverunner primarily for kiteboarding support means a lot of idling, this can be a big problem using pre-mix.
Assuming properly maintained oil lines & good clamps, I think modern oil injection is at least as reliable as the rest of the engine. Oil pump failures seem to be exceedingly rare. Sure, a pump could fail. But so could a plethora of other engine parts. I would guess that more 2 stroke engines have died due to improperly mixed pre-mix than have died due to oil pump failure...
Using pre-mix, my xl1200 would stall if I idled around for 5 or 10 minutes or so. (Opening the throttle to clear the plugs isn't always an option.) The only way to restart it would be to change the spark plugs. Now, with oil injection, I can idle around all I want and the plugs only load up a little bit. It still runs & starts fine.
Yeah, a 4-stroke would be even better, but I don't put enough hours on the waverunner to be worth the investment.
Just my thoughts. |
