this petition is on kiteforum...pls read and sign. After 3 kiters broke the 50 knot barrier over 500m, the ISAF is not currently recognizing their efforts. This action on their part is a disgrace!
Petition is short and to the point

Does sailing.org matter? I thought WSSRC were the keepers of the true record:

(p.s. I signed the petition)

We've taken it all, including their speed records. Why do they still try to keep us down?

I signed the petition. I think the problem is that we wear board shorts over our wetsuits....

Probably the point of contention is the fact that a traditional sailing craft has some sort of mast that is fixed to the hull although it need not be a rigid connection. With traditional sailing vessels, most, if not all, of the driving force transmitted to the hull is lateral because the mast is mostly vertical (although it can be swept back).

It could be said that a kite powered craft might be more like a low flying aircraft where much of the weight of the 'craft' is supported by a horizontal wing. Videos of the speed runs show the kite providing some amount of upward lift which acts to suspend the hull above water and thus reduce hull drag. They look almost like they are flying downwind and may only be minimally connected to the water.

I'm not saying that a kiteboard did not break the 50 knot barrier and that in itself is a significant achievement. And it is certainly a wind powered craft. But I can certainly see where there may be some room for interpretation on whether a kiteboard is really a sailboat of sorts. Sailors don't like to loose bragging rights so there will be some resistance to allowing a kiteboard to take away their record.

Maybe a kite powered craft with a short "mast" going up to the bar would make the difference.

I'm # 150. Like the comments by everyone!

My mast is 45 cm and has 4 lines attached to it. Hobie Cats rise out of the water and are certainly called a sailboat.

247.

If we can't keep up, we'll change the rules. These are the same babies who took their ball and went home if they started losing as kids. (Apparently as adults too...)

You can reach the ISAF with comments via their web site at http://sailing.org/contactisaf.php. Please state your point and avoid insults and demeaning language, as that will not add to a persuasive stance.
