If you are just going out for first time it is best to just get a sponge a be a booger for a while. Feels way better when you get smacked in the face!!

Both polyester and epoxy boards use fiberglass as a reinforcement, it is only the resin matrix that is different. |
epoxys can come in very strong strengths, depending on the hardener used...way stronger than polyester resin...allowing you to use less/lighter cloth, resulting in a lighter board... they also allow you to use different cores and cloth.

Back to the original question of do we surf the oregon coast? The answer to that is yes and often. My personal opinion, if you limit yourself to one thing whether it is kite or surf you are missing out on a lot of potential JOY.
Stay open minded to both, bring your surf board to the coast along with your kite gear and take advantage of what the ocean offers up. If you do,the chances that you are going to be driving home with a smile on your face rather than being grumpy cause u got skunked go up a bunch.
As far as the board goes, go for 9'0 to 9'6" with plenty of glide and float.
See ya in the water

For travel especially, epoxy or surf tech boards are great because they are so tough, but compared to a conventional fiberglass board, they don't have as good of a feel. Surf techs, in particular, are pretty stiff and chattery.
Surfing on the Oregon coast can be frustrating as hell; it is really tough to get a day with light wind, clean swell, good tide and no crowd. When it does happen, it is magic; I've had days in Oregon that I would put up there with any good day in Mexico. As PDXMD said, surfers are not as receptive to new people (or any people for that matter) in the water. Surfing is different than kiting in that you are competing for a finite resource and it always creates some friction.
To answer the original questions:
1) from April to October, I probably average one surf day a week. Actually, since I started kiting, maybe a little less.
2) the waves are mostly fast close-out beach breaks, but there are spots and days when you can butter the muffin.
3) board: 6' 0" quad fin, swallow tail; weight: 170ish; skill: shitty
