ok dokee. Sorry if I got a little aggressive, just seemed like people were jumping on the "you guys are too cool" trip. Which pisses me off because nothing could be further than the truth.

I hear where you are coming from - if everyone kept telling me that I was doing something because I thought I was too cool for it - when in reality I had my own personal reasons for doing what I do - then yeah, it would get frustrating.

But let me expand on what I was saying earlier. When I was new to kiting I couldn't figure out why other guys were not wearing a leash - it didn't make any sense to me. I didn't know any other kiters so I couldn't ask (I didn't know about this forum) - so I had to make an assumption based solely on my perception of the situation which was wrong - I also had to make some assumptions regarding helmets and vests - why aren't dudes wearing this stuff? Again - I didn't know anyone so I had to make an assumption - its cus they must think they are too cool for this stuff - like most assumptions in life, its partially correct and partially false.

so anwyays I'm rambling - back to the point - I wore a leash because I thought other people were too cool for a leash - so I said, to hell with that, I'm not losing my board and I don't care if people think I look like a kook. But in reality people weren't wearing them because they are dangerous - and after thinking about the situation for a while - I have decided that a leash is too dangerous for me when I ride.

at times we seem to think that because something unsafe has yet to spank us really hard, then it must be okay.

this mindset is common.

its like the guy who jumps out of a 100 story building-about the 50th floor, as he rockets downward, he thinks: "so far so good."

good judgement comes from experience.
experience comes from bad judgement.

learn to body drag or sit on the beach with the other gomers.

When I was first learning I asked a pro rider pal of mine if I should get a leash. He told me I should just tie a noose around my ankle. No more than half an hour later, we saw a guy get attacked by his board after a crash and get 12 stitches in his shoulder. I promptly spent the next two days practicing body dragging. I have never needed anyone to get my board since. I can usually get to it in 1 and 1/2 tacks. It's worth spending the time to get body dragging down and then you won't ever need a leash and risk bodily harm. I've seen some nasty stuff over the years with those things. The only leashes that seem to be moderately safe are the retractable ones on a spool. I don't know who makes them but they seem to reduce the risks. Funny how back in the "old days" people wouldn't wear kite leashes but have a board leash around their ankles. Those were the days! Oh yeah, the really best part was having shackles instead of spreader bar hooks. That was neat!

To anyone considering wearing a board leash, you will profit by reading the following threads from Kiteforum...I don't think any point of contention, pro or con has been missed:

My advice to anyone who still feels he or she wants to make use of a board leash is to use:

(1) The "Keyback Reel", taped with electrical tape to a strap on the harness. Put a easily broken plastic snap on the end of the leash line, and maybe even replace the plastic coated stainless steel cable with some nylon cord. Use the set-up only to keep from looing your board, when the wind dies, or during self-rsscue, etc.

(2) For full time use, get a $10 fly fishing reel at Walmart, and follow the instructions in the above posts.

I am not avocating the use of a leash for everyone, but it is not such a bad idea for some riders, in some situations. The keyback reel costs $15, and the flyfishing reel costs $10.
