I have to agree that the mindset of simply accusing others that "they don't really care" or that they are "not doing their part, so why should I?" must be a super convenient way to go through life and not examine anything that you are actually doing.

People like fisherman are symptomatic of the problem actually. When given the opportunity to lessen their footprint, they simply point to others and say "he or she isn't doing it!" " I will act when everyone else acts".

What is depressing is that they sincerely believe that. I'm not going to help because others are not helping. This kind of attitude is a serious detriment to society. If challenged, they can cherry pick data to support their decision. Paper bags are worse for the environment!!! Look at the carbon footprint!! Really? Is energy consumption the single factor that we are evaluating?

Ask yourself this... how much paper is trickling through the food chain right now? How many toxic chemicals are being released from decaying paper?

Or, if you feel it is convenient. Don't investigate the issue at all. Just start pointing fingers.

It is so much easier to tell other people what they can and cannot do rather than act on your own supposed convictions.

Maybe you just need to honest with yourself and admit you are a greater contributor to the problem than the average human being.

Answer this one question.

If every human in the world consumed as much as you measured in terms of carbon foot print, would that put the potential for a health environment in In a better or worse trajectory?

You are a 1%'er on a global scale that likes to tell other people what they should or shouldn't do. You knee jerk into banning plastic bags, because it seems to make sense. However, after exercising a minimal amount of curiosity, your knee jerk solution appears to not to be well informed. Just stop while you are behind and try walking the talk. You wont, because it requires actual personal sacrifice.

Now that that’s settled you windmill tilters oughtta read up on thermohaline circulation & the Younger-Dryas Event, and ask yourselves whether human society should be concerned that the Gulf Stream is shutting down...

Everything is just fine.

Chop open one of the sea turtles, you will find all the plastic bags

All single use plastic must go

None of the sea turtles have any plastic bags in their stomach. I know - stupid claim because I can't prove it just as your statement was equally stupid & unprovable.

Yay you got your ban, great, next you can outlaw cow flatulence in OR. That'll save some sea turtles too. It's great that you passed a law achieving practically nothing but you can feel better about yourselves....laws should be about feelings

It turns out that about 95 percent of all the plastic that reaches the world's oceans gets flushed through just 10 rivers: The Yangtze, the Indus, Yellow River, Hai River, the Nile, the Ganges, Pearl River, Amur River, the Niger, and the Mekong (in that order).

The Yangtze dumps 1.5 MILLION tons / year of plastic into the Ocean. The Columbia dumps 1 ton / year. I support getting the Columbia to 0 plastic, but until those other rivers are cleaned up, the plastic problem isn't going away.

This can't be true, Jeremy.

If it was, environmentalists would be calling for some sort of trade restriction against the big polluting countries, instead of happily buying cheap products from places that dump plastic and toxic waste into rivers/oceans!

I mean what good is being an environmentalist if your efforts focus on that which can do no measurable good? Surely those that are "concerned with environmental issues" are smart enough to see past their own backyards. And how could the past 50 years of cleaning up the environment in the first world have been all about just "outsourcing" that pollution to other countries that have no environmental restrictions? That would cause immense uproar among all of those whom claim to be concerned about the environment on a global scale.

And I also can't bring myself to believe that 20+ years of curbside recycling programs have, in a way, been direct shipping that waste to the ocean. If that were true, wouldn't environmentalist be calling for someone to go to jail for such a big lie perpetrated on the public for so many years?

Humans, especially those that claim to be "educated" and "woke", can't possibly be that willfully stupid. If they were, then the outlook would be much more bleak for humanity than the bright wonderful future we will welcome soon.

I don't imagine there's anyone left in the Gorge that smokes?
Cigarette butts are polluting the ocean more than plastic straws — so why not ban these?

Well do the math. . . more smokers out there than people who use straws. Plus straws have been banned in some places/cities which only skews the pollution problem of cigarette butts vs plastic straws. And how many straws does a smoker use vs the # of cigarettes they have in a 24 hour period.

I wonder what the probablity of a smoker to properly dispose of a cigarette butt in the garbage when not on there personal property or living area?

If I had to guess I'd say it is 90% of them liter and just throw away the butt on the ground or street.

Perhaps I'm old-school or old fashion, but I was raised to clean up your own mess and to make a place better than the when you found it. I always pickup some garbage when I visit the beach, wunder bar, camping sites.

I doubt smokers will every change no matter how much they are encouaged to disposed of their cigarette butts in a responsible fashion.

And banning cigarettes. . .good luck with that one. Big corp. $$$ and in bed with gov't too much for that to ever happen. Gov't would miss all that tax revenue.

Cool! Tell me you're kiteboarding too... BTW, just tell 'em birds love that stuff. They think of the kite as a big cousin watching over them. Seriously, they really do.

The level of stupidity in the environmental movement is infinite. Outsourcing the west's pollution to the second and third world, while celebrating our "achievements" and calling for more of the same, is a crime of willful ignorance against humanity and life on this planet.

We need some conscientious, intelligent, and moral people in the environmental movement to actually fix the destruction caused by that very movement. But all we get is the same "ban bags and straws (only here in the west)".

If you truly want to stop the pollution and dumping in the world:

1. Stop exporting trash to 2nd and 3rd world countries. WE KNOW THEY DO NOT DISPOSE OF THAT TRASH LIKE WE WOULD!

2. Stop exporting "recyclables" to 2nd and 3rd world countries. SAME AS ABOVE!

3. Stop buying manufactured goods from 2nd and 3rd world countries that have no environmental restrictions because all the waste from those products production is dumped in the street, on the land, into their rivers, or on their coasts.

And please, stop wingeing that "caring for the environment" does anything positive. That ship sailed a long time ago. I wish humanity good luck on this, but until we acknowledge that stupidity rules on a global scale - lead by those that consider themselves environmentalists - we don't even have a chance.

Thank you ldhr for that! Exactly!

If we stay focused on what we do ourselves live well & influence others by example - it's a far better influence than fatuous mandates onto others. Especially, if the mandate is only minimally consequential.

No kiting on Palmyra. It's understandable as the complications of medical treatment for an injury are really substantial...fly-out evac, probably 2+ day wait, etc. Really the wind isn't spectacular either. The upside is 3 months off to kite wherever!
