Southsyde!!!!!
Setup for a Manzo to Barview mecca-downwinder. Grabbed Rollo and Mystrygrl - tasty wind swell could barely hold the 7m and srt together. R & M on 9m.
Went well till we got to the Nehalem jetty - got halfway across the inlet and wind goes 35 to zero.
Epic swimming for all - cept Genek who showed up hour half later on his 6m - very nice
Southsyde out! _________________ Go Deep!

Wow.
Thanks for the entertainment.
Saw some really good riding and some huge airs.
Cool to see the different faces and license plates from BC down.
Tami and I watched from the Iredale sand dune and it didn't even look like home.
I am not claiming to be the expert on anything.
And we rarely just watch on a good day--- but it was mesmerizing.
Watched two guys get completely yarded down the beach when trying to set down their kites in a pack of tourists.
One guy in a drysuit (WTF?????) was launching and landing his kite with messed up lines right in a pack of sunbathers with children.
A lot of guys/girls riding in 1 inch of water.
And about 5 went 'over the handlebars' when they hit the beach.
On a positive note I am stoked to see everyone enjoying themselves because it is truly the place to be on weekends like this.
And there was a guy on a light blue kite and a surfboard (maybe an LF kite?) and he was surfing pretty smooth----really using the board and the waves----fun to watch. He took off from the shipwreck and went downwind.
Maybe Julien Fillion---are you in town?

Yeah pretty sick weekend. Warm weather, steady winds, waves that were forgiving and still fun.
Scott - I can't speak for all the events at shipwreck but our crew stayed safe and in order, we did most of downwinders from Lot B to Del Ray.
I did notice at one point it was packed with kites all the way from the jetty to shipwreck. It was actually hard to find room on the water to ride down the line. Luckily it cleared up well after that.
You know though seeing all those kites the whole way up and down on what seemed like an exceptionally clear day was also pretty awesome.
I was super stoked on my surfboard this weekend. Its too small to catch the little waves without a lot of help, but it carves awesome. I think Trevor got a taste for the surf too, once you get addicted there is no going back... |

One more thing - super weird but there was almost nobody out there today... Trevor, Henry, Nicole and I did Lot B -> Del Ray and only saw one kite.
Powered 11m the whole way, me-so-tired... |

Will anyone be riding the coast during the week (tue-thur)? Could use a partner and a hookup on a cheap place to camp (back yard). _________________ Mental attitude is more important than mental capacity |

the key thing to understand is that tons of people never flock to the coast because the coast is good, the hordes only go there when the gorge is also dead. so for most of the people you see, this is really just their incidental backup location for when the gorge is flat.
pretty sad, but this explains the kookery you see.
i would have to say the level of wave riding at newport beginning of last week was really high, and incomparable to what you normally see on the north coast. pretty cool to share a place like that with 15 people who are all doing the same thing and are skilled. most had just driven down for a couple days, but it's fun to see so many good riders in one spot.
maybe you should travel more to the areas of the coast that don't happen to be closest to portland.

Packs of riders in the gorge cuddle huddle fashion going downwind together.
Practically no one actually riding waves....just lawn mowing galore.
I really do not think any of the people were total beginners.

ha ha! that happens so often. fickle and unpredictable for sure. microclimates are fun, and interesting on the edges.
if you get to the jetty you should be relieved. if you make it to the middle of rockaway, you're really lucky and will have been schlogging for the last mile. trying to get beyond that is just crazy. you should never really expect to get more than a quarter mile or so past the jetty. just not worth it.
maybe scottnorby should start directing everyone to this downwinder instead--half of the kiting population will be lost at sea. no more crowds.

Hey Gabe.....not sure if you were saying that I should go somewhere further from Portland or???
We actually live in Astoria.
We will be heading to Newport this summer though to get some action in my ol stomping grounds.
lived there for 12 years and I have not been there for about 5 years.
And PKH you are right........all those kites were a cool site.
The tourists were dropping jaws. |

| right, but ft stevens is just the closest and easiest place for everyone else from portland or the gorge, so that's why you get so many people on the flat gorge days, and why so many of them don't really appreciate the coast for what it is. |
