Hey Gang,
First time going to La Ventana. Any advice on the best route to drive (in a non 4-wheel drive) from the Cabo Airport to La Ventana?
1. Mex 1 and then turn off just past San Antonio?
or
2. Mex 1 to Mex 19 to La Paz???
3. Others?

| Unless you have good clearance. The road can be washed out with some pretty gnarly gullies. In a regular rental car, go to La Paz and take the opportunity to stock up on supplies. |

Hey Dano, Jodi and I used the shortcut last year both directions and we were driving a low rider PT Cruiser. The road was really decent for us .....in fact it was fun driving it and I know you'd enjoy it. Unless it has rained heavily just before your trip you shouldn't have any problem.

Q4 If I drive from Cabo San Lucas, what is the best route?
San Jose Airport to Los Barriles
45 minutes, 41 miles / 66 km, Highway 1 North, paved 2 lane
Los Barriles to San Antonio
45 minutes, 29 miles / 46 km, Highway 1 North, paved 2 lane
San Antonio to La Ventana
30 minutes, 26 miles / 42 km, gravel/dirt 2 lane road (San Antonio to Highway 268) and paved 2 lane road (Highway 268), when you pass the gas station and group of palm trees on the highway in San Antonio watch for the turn about 100 yards after the gas station and turn right, going through the small town, heading east on the dirt road to Los Planes. Follow the signs from Los Planes to La Ventana.

Hey! Thanks Rollo, Kite Diva & everyone who PM’d me with info on LV & LB & LP! 
Thinking we’ll go up to La Paz to stock up on food, beer & water and then loop back down to LV. It will most likely be dark by the time we are out on the road...  so may play it safe the first time and stick to the main roads.

Just in case you haven't already heard, watch for cows at night on the road. Last year a guy on a motorcycle had a run in with one - broke his collar bone and was scraped up bad.

Got it! Cows and other critters are everywhere at night! Thanks again for the great feedback. We'll be driving in the daylight or on the main roads with our eyes wide open  ....

I talked to him briefly and, as I remember, it had been almost 2 weeks since the accident. He had his arm in a sling and he had a huge scab on his forehead/side of face. He had another week before his return flight so was missing about 3 weeks of kiting out of his vacation. As I recall, he said he was riding on the back of his buddies bike when they hit a cow that was lying down on the road like they like to do at night. Sorry, I don't know more details - maybe the guy or a friend will read this and respond.

Hi. I am down in La Ventana right now. The road through San Antonio is in fine shape. I just drove it twice today to drop a friend off at the airport.
Interesting looking at the above threads. I just hit a cow on a motorcycle here last week. Sounds like I faired better than the other guy... but I still have a long ride back... Cows, goats, & even horses are all over the place even during the day so it's worth taking the turns nice & slow. If I see one animal anywhere on the side of the road, I slow down immediately as they tend to run in packs. Also, they seem to like to turn out in the road at the last possible minute.
Driving down here is really straightforward though by developing country standards. Not much to be worried about except animals and the occasional blind curve. Whatever you decide, don't take the costal route to La Ventana from Los Barrilles. Brutal road... |

| Back in the mid eightys I drove the full length of the baja. I found it hard to determine if the turn coming up was a 25 mph turn or a 60 mph turn. The turns are NOT marked for speed. After many hours I figured out that you look ahead and see how may crosses are next to the turn. (They put little white crosses up every time some dies at a corner) The more crosses the slower you go. Very sobering! |
