heading costal this weekend. visiting from SLC, UT. is the coast this time of year full on 5/4 wettie or can i get away with 3/2? hope to get the marina near lincoln city and some roads end and hope to not be swimmin. is it worth packign a full 5/4?

also, anyone else heading out there or live there than plan on kiting? i plan to stop by the surf shop and see whats the program, but kiting with others in strange places is always preferable to solo. i'll buy the beers if you bring the experience....

so, driving out there from PDX friday morning and comign back sunday if anyone is heading out and wants to carpool. looks like the coast has a better forecast than the columbia for the weekend?

Unless you're retarded like me, the coast is just about always 5/4... The central coast has been averaging in the low 50s. In the last 2 days, ~55 was the highest, but it's currently ~49!

I was thinking the coast as well this weekend. Can't really help with info since I'm just as new to the coast Very Happy Probably hit the north coast though, thinking Manzo or Fort Stevens.....which looks like the better place to hit since I have no swell stick (yet) Rolling Eyes

And if you havent been Climatized for cold weather (like winter). Then i would suggest bringing a coat or some layers.....oh and the 5/4 will save your arse. Wink

can't wear a 3/2 at the coast, unless a new pat-goochie with wool inside.

coast looks good for sure this weekend. you should be fine with a 3/2 as the weather looks to be on the warmer side. typical coast conditions for me = 5/4 but this weekend could get away with 3/2.

There is a Kite Festival this weekend at D-River, and the locals are hoping to put on a show for the land lubber kiters and tourists.

For local info, your best bet is to stop in at the Oregon Surf Shop in the Taft area of Lincoln City. Ben is a great resource and would be glad to help you out with any local info.

However, checking out IKitesurf forecast as of now, for the weekend, it is looking beautiful...but not for kiting. Several days away though, so you never know.

Oh, and always bring the 5/4. You might get lucky after a south wind pushes some warm water up, but the great NW winds that we love, bring the Alaskan cool 50 deg waters. If you hit Siletz Bay, the river water can keep the temp up, but if the tides coming in, it's still pretty cold.

Good Luck

I say bring em all! I finally broke down and bought a second 5/4 this year. So nice to have a dry wettie for that 2nd session! Things just take a while to dry out in the fog and rain! (and hail). Cleanline in Seaside has been blowing them out so I couldn't resist.

I also picked up a new 6' fish yesterday...so excited to strap it up. Hope it all fits in the Lo-Liner! Drunk

Anyway, good luck SLC...if you end up on the North end, stop by Cleanline. We did 10 miles of downwinders yesterday. Roasty warm with some nice little shapes coming through...oh yeah, whale sightings everywhere too!

Cool Cool Cool

3/2? not a smart move. you might get by with just being chilly, but if you're new to the coast, it's likely you will drop your kite, get tumbled in the washing machine, and end up swimming in.... in the possible 20-30 minutes it takes you to swim in, you could get hypothermia and drown... bring your 5/4... if you're bringing a suit, you might as well be safe, and warm.

I would say it depends on how much flailing you do
If you are an expert you'll freeze
if a gumby you'll roast

thanks, if it is windy- maybe bringing both like you mentioned isn't such a bad idea. i'm just super paranoid about the flying with kite equip thing. trying to keep a bag below 50lbs is tough, especially with bringing both wetties. add trying to fit it all in a "golf" bag withoug rasing suspicions is tough.

do you guys have any sort of local forecaster or do you all use ikitesurf? we are lucky down here to have an amatur forecaster give us the report most of the time. and ikitesurf dosen't help us out a whole bunch for slc. i really could go anywhere to chase wind this weekend and don't want to peg myself somewhere it won't be windy. this is sort of a get away for me and i expect to be riding as much as possible. i assume the weekend is looking bleak for the gorge too?

where is d-river? Cleanline? i was thinking of driving straight to lincoln, but could drive the coast as well looking for wind friday or even head back up that way saturday.... how does the coast work? if its windy up north, will it be windy near central? i know next to nothing about coastal winds.

i understand i'm visiting, but a point in teh right direction woudl be awesome.

sorry for all the kooky questions..

The N coast (Seaside and North to the jetty) may be a good call Friday/Sat and will probably blow. Its a nice drive on hwy 26 to Seaside to check it out. It is also a short drive south from there to Manzanita where the wind zone really begins. You could hit Manzo early Friday (say 11am to 2pm), then drive to LC for an evening session (about 2 hrs drive - nice drive but unless you plan on hitting Oceanside, LC is about the next windy & accessible stop). The sun stays out late!

D-river is in LC - Oregon Surf Shop is too
Cleanline is in Seaside (take a left off hwy 101 at 1st street and go 1 block)

Sorry, didn't realize you were blowing in from out of the area.

Wind sites:
http://www.ikitesurf.com/windandwhere.iws?regionID=122&regionProductID=1&timeoffset=0
pick the " Wind FlowViz Fx Map" on the left, then you can pick your day/time for a pretty good forecast for the whole Oregon Coast.

http://www.oregonsurfcheck.com/
great site that basically has the NOAA forecast on it.

These 2 sites give you an idea of what the swell and wind are doing from Lincoln City to Newport. Of course it is only an idea.

D-River is in Lincoln City, and it is an Oregon State Park. It is the north and south divider for the city. It is the only place on Hwy 101 in traveling through Lincoln City where you can see the ocean. That is where the kite festival is-this isn't kites as in water, it is kites as in keep my feet on dry land and make figure 8s in the sky.

If you are ready for the ocean, Roads End State Park, off Logan Rd (you can find it on a map), at the north end of Lincoln City usually has the best wind/waves. If you aren't ready for the ocean, check out Siletz Bay. It is on the south end of Lincoln City. There is a city park, called Josephine City Park, at the west end of SW 65th to launch from. Parking is limited, just don't block someones driveway. This time of year, even a high tide gives you lots of beach to launch from. Except for the river channel on the west side, you can basically touch wherever there is water. It is very safe, and easy to ride.

Oregon Surf Shop is on Hwy 101, at the corner of SW 50th and Hwy 101. Stop in there for more info.

Hope this helps, but Ikitesurf is calling for light east winds pretty much everywhere.

Sound advice. The oregon coast is awesome but I wouldn't goso far as to call it "friendly"

I know from experience back on the east coast that NOAA are the ones to watch for costal forecast and ikite tends to be 50/50 at best. Is it the same out here on the left coast? Noaa is calling for some solid stuff Friday-Sunday
