a tantrum is way different from a frontroll.
right from the takeoff...It's a "trip-flip" which kinda means that you sort of "trip" yourself in to the air off your toeside edge, not your heelside edge. This is quite hard off of flat water, but much easier when you are going straight in to a little wave to help kick you in the air (ie.. a wake, or a small wave for kiteboarding). wind chop doesn't work great though.
Proper tantrums are really hard and are closer to a true backflip than a frontroll.
"frontrums" are ugly and are a result of a frontroll-like takeoff... I know - that's what half of my tantrums turn in to.
as for getting more inverted on s-bends... proper technique + more power & more pop... throw it harder! Last edited by Kyle on Thu Jun 19, 08 3:28 pm; edited 1 time in total |

And there it is...thanks magic.
So back to the start for me...nice to have the proper steps. Apologies if I confused anyone. I thought I was doing them properly...guess not... |

Spike, if you would stop edging like a pre-teen girl you would pop off the water more and believe me, your legs will fly over your head. It happens without really trying.
From my observations (and I'm not saying I'm joe super star) you need to get your speed up quite a bit. You also need to get your kite lower; something I have learned by pulling the unhooked dangle to dork landing.
Stringy, i'm going to work on the unhooked front rolls next time I get out on the water. Do you think unhooked front rolls are easier than hooked in? Cause my hooked in rolls kind of suck. |

I will have to say that despite the talk of poo on my unicorn horn, this thread has got me totally stoked!!
I think there needs to be a little more pushing each other to go bigger, pop harder, and spin faster. When I used to downhill mt. bike it was all about pushing the envelope and progressing. It seems all to easy to just mow the lawn, throw a back roll here and there and call it good.
Are we going to take it all in 08 or just talk about it!! |

i think unhooked front and back rolls are waaaayyy way way easier than hooked in. i pretty much always unhook to do any sort of back or forward rolls. for two main reasons.
1) you dont want to be pivoting around the bar, this is awkward and you dont have as much control than if you're just dangling under your bar. i also think you are going to be able to spin faster when you're not rotating around your spreader bar on your harness.
2) not having to rotate around where your kite is attached to your harness and just dangling will allow you much greater control over how many spins or rotations you want to do. it makes it sssoooo much easier to turn your body 180 degrees at a time, so you can always point your board downwind, which will help make the majority of landings. Then you can just spin 180, then another 180, then another 180 as much as you have time for while you are in the air. yea this takes some practice to get used to, but it works. i dont really know how to describe it, but i just kinda of twist my elbows and look the direction i want to spin, to stop spinning i look downwind and spot where i want to hit the water, if i decide i'm still pretty high up, i will go for another half or whole rotation.
hhmmmm, well fuck, not enough wind to go kite, what now? |

My bad
When I said call it a tantrum, I meant call it a tantrum when you're talking to the bros on the beach that didn't see it.
I'm pretty sure a lot of legit moves happen when nobody's looking.
Same thing as catching a fish "this big"
This may help as far as trick definitions.
Some are kinda vague though

Hell yeah dude! Where were you last weekend? We're already taking it all and gonna keep pushing it all summer. No going back now. _________________ The Slider Project, LLC

We need to be pushing that shit. Everyone should be seeing double everytime they crash, otherwise you're not pushing hard enough!
We need more beer!!!! bhaaha!

I'm sure bindings would help a ton, but I'm gonna try it in regular straps first, since I know it's possible. |

Man I love this thread and others like it. Forrest is right! We do need to push our riding and step it up. Watching all of the action this weekend just got me all stoked! Now, reading threads like this just gets me all juicy, and I can't wait to get all wet. I'm trying to get more comfortable with my unhooked riding Forrest. Trying to kick the riding up a notch.
Maybe we can get more videos like the one of Tucker doing that spin move, dangle, switch kite, go the other direction move. Videos like that are great to learn from. Keep em comin!
I love living in Kite central! |

For sure, I'm stoked to hold a clinic for anyone that wants to rock some raleys and hit the slider. I'd say a nice raley is a requirement for hitting the slider cause then you're definitely comfortable with unhooking.
Spike, you need to think about baring off downwind before you unhook to slack your lines a little and make it easy to unhook. Then lean back rapidly to set the edge and turn your board away from your kite. The smoother all this happens, and if you can make it one solid/fluid motion, the nicer the raley will be. When you lean forward, you have all your body weight to throw backwards when you're ready, but if you don't lean forward, your going to end up skipping like a stone across the water.
This should all happen with your kite just below or at 45 (10 o'clock). No cheating here, I see tons of people doing it with their kite at 11 o'clock and then telling me they were trying to keep it low.
Lets rally a 3:00PM session at the Sandbar on Saturday. Everyone meet at the bottom of the ramp to the Sandbar and we'll discuss what needs to happen. Then we'll all go out and session near the slider/kicker in the mouth of the hood river where it's nice and flat. |

Stringer - no worries dude. Go try to hit some tantrums. They're eff'ing fun. You'll know if you get it right.
Forget about the fish stories and just try it until you make it solid, then someone else will tell about your big fish for you. That's the cool thing about kiteboarding - you can just going at something until it works without much consequence.
if you happen to be a goofyfooter (or wanna do them switch), then try them the next small day that you hit the coast. Perfect setup. |

I suck, can someone teach me how to do a legit trick????
I can get fully extended while hooked in, is that cool? I think its pretty legit.
I can also take my arms off of the bar completely while i flying through the air, i think thats pretty legit also.
And to all others who dont RECOGNIZE, Joby is one of the most legit powered riders on this planet, just ask someone like SLEEZY and they will tell you straight. Joby gets RESPECT from the pros, so show some RESPECT bitchnazzes. _________________ I heart dangling |
