I've gotten a few comments from users about the number of stickies on top of the forum. (Stickies are threads that "stick" to the top of the forum.) I thought I'd start a thread so we could get feedback on this feature.

My personal feeling is that stickies are useful, but sometimes it can go a bit overboard with lots of stickies. We do have an events calendar that gets used and is useful for describing upcoming events. (Thanks to Mark for moderating it.) I'm all for spreading the word on important events, but I also think we've developed a bit of a sticky mess.

Here's some potential ideas if we decided to make changes:

- Limit on the length of time for a sticky, and/or the time before an event
- Limit on the total number of stickies at any given time
- Instead of stickies, event coordinators could post updates to a topic pushing it to the top
- Limits on what's appropriate to put in sticky title (i.e. no brands or shop names)

OR

- Keep status quo

What do you all think?

Stickies seem to be just fine for me.

Don't have too much of an opinion either. To be honest - my eyes generally just glance over them.

yeah, they don't phase me. I appreciate all the efforts to keep the brand thing to a min, that's nice. Status quo is fine by me on this topic.

I would hate to have to go through a whole page of them to get to the goods. It looks like one of them could be consolidated anyway. All is good in moderation.

I never look at them. They might get more visablilty if they are just bumped or updated every once in a while instead of a sticky.

Yeah, Rico's probably right. I think people have gotten used to glossing over them, which kinda defeats the purpose of having them there in the first place. Having them there for a really long time doesn't help either, but I've gotten used to it by now.

I usually only try to ask for a sticky to be posted for only about a week, since it does seem to defeat the purpose if it sits for too long up at the top of the forum.

Maybe you could put some sort of parameters for sticky rules up (ie timelimit and relevance towards local kite community)?

some kind of linking cross/cross referencing solution

I.e. just keep one sticky with content like this.

Liquid Force Slider

CGKA Hood River Sandbar Cleanup

etc.

Then when people edit them they bump up the normal way, gathering attention. But, if you want to find a sticky type thread you don't have to search, you just go into the sticky thread and read the links.

I'm with Rico, I don't even see them anymore. Is it possible to change their background color or something?

Stickies are always a good thing. Just don't get all Toby or anything.

I like the 1 week before guideline, and the different color idea. Also consolidating would be good.

There are certain subjects that I'd like to see stickied for a long time like KB4C, but for those I think maybe a routine posting to push the topic up might work better.

Good ideas, keep em coming!

Phil,
I think that the stickys are great. They are more important the bullcrap I post and I'm big enough to admit that. However, I would like you to change my title "expert kite" because I don't see myself as such. I would prefer the lable Safety Obsessed!

Phil. I'm with Rico - let's make this post a sticky!! We could have a poll as to whether this should be a sticky.
