It is a difficult situation to try and help people not kill themselves and others. Good job with the launch intervention!

PS a few paragraphs here and there would really help the readability of your post B99... Wink

I don't think if you fly a C-kite, a "Bow" or a SLE kite that any one of them is safer than the other per say. It's about the person controlling it is the issue. One "expert" flying a C-kite would be safer than a beginner flying a Bow kite. A Bad driver in a safe car is not always safe if they don't no what they are doing.

PostThu Jun 05, 08 8:44 am    Let's be really clear about what I was telling the guy Reply with quote

He had his 9 meter fuel ready to rock and was standing to the southwest side of the rock pile. He was excited and looked confused about where to launch. His friend was telling him to launch the kite and then walk to water. It was really windy. I thought that I wouldn't want to do that even with my 7 meter, regardless of c or sle. Too risky. I walked over and said that," It may be a better idea to launch from the water side as you could get body dragged on the rocks. He agreed and we adjusted his gear. The only mistake made was that the freind let his kite go to far infront wind window. Subsequently the kite faded a good 15 to 30 feet back and then shot up and he was ready to go. Forest must have taken those shots right after the launch. Take a good look at the kite and you tell me if he has enough power?
The guy was stoked to have free gear. Free stuff rules but the consequences of free gear can be steep price at the docs office.

(I walked over and explained to him that if he lost control he would end up doing a painful body drag up and over the rocks. His friend was not around so I told him where to stand and about the wind effect due to the rock pile, east of the rock pile it drops a bit and then lifts so keep yer kite up dude. He listened and he adjusted and then his buddy launched him. It was, to tell you the truth, a really poor launch!)

first off that launce is fine! second dont keep you kite up 12 is not the safe zone, if you keep your kite up at 12 the only place to go is up so dont suggest that anymore, and third THE SPORT IS NOT SAFE! so its nice that you want to suggest advise to all the "biggners" may be you should.. then you could tell all you exciting stories to yourself, or maybe you should right a book and name it kook proof. anyways i thought this tread was funny.

PS if you see me kiting i dont need any advise! Thanks!

bulae99/diggy

Being helpful is not a crime and I for one would definitely appreciate some advice as a newbie out on the beach while setting up. The key in my opinion is assessing how receptive the newbie (unsuspecting 'darwin award candidate') is to sage advice.

In addition, kiteboarding accidents on river is in no one's interest at hood river. It's bad press, bad karma, and bad business.

OK, that's my 2 cents.

I wonder who actually owns the property and access road at Rufus?

I wonder what it would actually take to cause the place to get shut down?

I wonder if we have established any kind of legally defined easement, like a "right of way", through our use of the place for the past 10 years?

PostFri Jun 06, 08 5:05 am    WTF let's sum this post up for what it is... Reply with quote

1. Kook is not a negative term in my o. Newb is not a negative term either. It's a perception of ability level based on a kiters willingness to take a "calculated" risk.
2. I need to work on my punctuation, paragraph breakage, and post in a less wordy fashion. Thank you Dano and Barbie
3. Holly hates me and her avitar looks like a big bruised ass cheek.
4. Slither hates SLE, Bow's and thinks I'm a tool. Oh yea he doesn't want me to pm him.
5. Give advice but don't be an tool. Be nice and "treat others the way you would like to be treated." ~Grandad Earnest
6. PDX. monkey boy's girlfriend is hot but I've seen better faces, but who's looking at her face. It's better than the horse with a tool on the head. CAn i get an amen?
7. A person's safety is worth risking being called a "wiener" if you actually think that they might get hurt. I really was nice and so was he. I hope to see him again having a blast with his friends on the beach. At some point he will realize that a newer kite, C 5 line, SLE, or Hybrid, will make if fun and safe.
8. Launching at Rufus from the Rock side is not smart and none of the Rock Pile guys do it..ever.
9. Kite size selection is based on your perceived level of risk. Your perceived level of ability dictates whether or not you really know that you are risking your butt or not.
10. Access to Rufus is controlled by the state of Oregon.

Let's go kiting

bulae, please stop ranting for 20 paragraphs and trying to cover it all up by that last little "lets go kiting Crying or Very sad " wannabe inspiration finish.

One more post on this subject and I'm starting another gear war, I'm thinking RRD vs F-One, neither of which I actually know anything about Wink

The launch in question was constructed by the Army Corp of Engineers and they have jurisdiction over it.

and Bulae99
You have it wrong in saying that it is not safe to launch west of the rock pile and...what was it..."none of the Rock Pile guys do it."

As a dedicated rock pile rider for 7 years I can safely say that when kiting first started going on at Rufus NOBOBDY launched from the cove except windsurfers. Myself, I have always launched to the west with all of "my crew" and have never had nor seen a problem there.

One launch enters....one launch leaves

You guys tell everybody it's a good idea to launch kite towards river on the windward side of the rock pile. Then walk the 27 m to the water, under your kite, and grab your board.

Good luck with that. Very Happy

Bulae,

I think the major gripe people have is that you have this tendency to want to play the roll of crossing guard at all the launches and keep bringing up points that have been re-hashed and re-hashed a thousand times.

Some of your great threads .....

"is the sand bar safe"
"self resuce and cold water..be prepared"
"everyone was a newb at some time, I have a question for beginers"
"if you kite at the hatch, you should read this post"
"knowing when not to go out, safety tip from spike day"
"leash set-up for beginers"
"near death at the spit"
and my favorite..

"can someone remind me what we can post on NWkite"

Do you see a common theme here? Why are you so goddamn safety obsessed? Yeah, we get it, people get hurt it threatens launches, but ya know what, there is always going to be some jackass out there, you can't possibly stop them all.

I never knew an expert kiter that was so consumed with the activities of the newbs.
P.S. Kook is a deragatory term when your callling someone you don't know a kook, but not when you use it with someone you know.

Example. "look at Gman on his skimboard..get that kook a twintip" -kook good

"oh great, look at this kook and his board leash made from clothesline" -koook bad

I don't have a problem with someone trying to be to safe. I have a problem when the opposite is true. Let Bulae be the crossing guard, who cares if that's how he chooses to spend his session.
