I dont know anything about surfboard construction and need some advice on making a repair where on the tail of the board a small chunk broke off revealing the core of the board. Any thoughts?

If you want to do it yourself, the right way to do it is go to a surf shop, buy a ding kit and follow the directions. If you don't care what it looks like, go to Freddies and buy a "bondo" fiberglass repair kit, in the paint or automotive section, for a fraction of the price. Fiberglass is a bit messy and temperature sensitive. Make sure that the temp is 65+ when you work on it. The directions usually give you a "drops of hardener per oz. of resin" for each temperature range. Or drop it off at a surf shop and let them do it for pretty cheap; that is a pretty small repair.

Or if you really dont care what it looks like, cram some wax in it and cover it with duct tape Laughing

For starters, ask yourself, what would Jerry do?; either let it fester or duct tape it.
However you choose to approach the problem, get yourself a cassette of Slayer: Seasons in the Abyss and crank while fixing; your problems will be solved.

Sand off the fracture
Tape off a dam to allow the resin to pool
Mix chopped glass in with the resin(small 1/16 inch pieces)
Pack resin into hole
let dry
sand to shape
Solerez will work too.

I use an expoxy stick for my holes like that one, you just cut off a piece, mead it, place on the hole, and let it sit for several hours.

Maui Board Building and Repair, by Bill Walters

Marine tex will work fine also. Looks like an easy repair.

If you go to your local boat repair/dealer marina, remember that boat resins are not UV stable.

If in the Gorge, go to Montery Bay Fiberglass over in Bingen, They have everything, even surfboard blanks, fins, boxes, instruction books and videos ...

Otherwise Bob at Gorge Performance will take care of you. Heck, let him repair it for you if you don't want to deal with the chemicals.

Board repair is a good skill and will save you money, have fun.
