Wed May 28, 08 5:06 pm What are you going to practice this weekend? |
|
|
You know that trick where you lift your board off of the water and invert, and kind of glide over the water, with your back just a few inches above the water? Not a very good description, but I think you know what I mean, there was a pic of Tucker doing it recently.
How do you do that? Do you send the kite? For some reason it really appeals to me and I want to practice it. What are others working on? Thanks for any advice.

Here's a pic of what I'm thinking of. What's going on here? Just a small send and invert?

| Slow backroll with a super-high (kite position), slow "kiteloop". Phil does them nice too! Tucker mainly just uses that as a transition though.

| cool. so is the backroll from a pop, or sent kite? How the kiteloop gets integrated?

You shouldn't even need to pop, just edge off. Then as kite goes to 12 O'Clock, it'll keep you lifted enough until you loop the kite around. The loop just gives you a little speed downwind to transition out without slogging. And I'm sure you could do it without the loop if you wanted, but you'd probably dip into the water for a sec (once the kite goes past 3 O'Clock) unless you're super lit to begin with.
Tucker can chime in with his exact technique.

Here is another description of what I believe you are talking about:
Starting heel side send the kite back slowly, lift feet, drag fwd hand on windward side to cause backroll, pull with back hand hard after rotation begins and loop the kite.
Landing options are toe side and continue in same direction or loop the kite 1.5 times and transition heel side.

Yeah no pop at all... one way to think about it is you just slightly send the kite just enough so you can lift your board off the water by lifting your legs.
Its kind of like those jumps you do when you are learning where you fly across only 1 foot off the water but for a long ways. The reason you do that kind of jump is because you lost your edge before the send. So this is the same thing just intentionally.
The kite loop is optional but on some kites it makes the whole move a lot smoother and easier. If you don't already know underpowered style backroll kiteloops its a good thing to learn first. Its pretty much the same move you just go into it with a lot more speed and wait longer to loop the kite.

That's a good explanation, thanks. Can't wait to try it.
What do you mean by this:

I guess I'm surprised that kiteloops are integrated into so many tricks. I'm just now learning to do them. I want to try backrolls, but I don't really see how to incorporate the kiteloop.

I have a video of Tucker from a few weeks back. Gotta download it off my cam, then downconvert it, so it'll be a few mins...
EDIT: Here's the link. Forgive the shitty quality. Even though it's low res, it's still encoded at 3m/sec which won't always stream the greatest.

Perfect vid Adam, Cool to see him tweaking the sheeting in slow-mo.
Does your cam do 60p or 60i? It looks really smooth...

| wow, sic vid. Its crazy that he's so underpowered, and then only powers up when he starts the rotation. Thanks for sharing that.

I'd like to try some of these newfangled backrolls and some downloop transitions. If I could stick both of those this weekend I'd be a happy unicorn.

My weekend will consist of:
Dialing-in Unhooked Backroll to revert.
Unhooked Frontroll with the hopes of getting an s-bend dialed.

Tuka.wmv ~13mb | Adam, did tucker loop the kite on that move? It looks like he just sent it to the other side.

My weekend will consist of getting BIG air over the Pacific! Great Hangtime too! (Like 10 hours...) No riding for me this weekend. But a Honolulu layover next week! Woo Hoo! I'm going to try and get my Toeside transitions down.
Great Video Adam!!! Is there anyway to do a PIP with what the kite is doing during the trick?
