I know this has been posted on here a lot and I didn’t really look at them until now.
Are there any good kite boarding schools out there? A friend of mine wants to learn kite boarding but I don’t feel comfortable teaching him. i was wondering if there are any good schools in Hood River? my friend has been flying my inflatable trainer and wants to get some water time.
Any input.
Thanks Alex

Alex, I would definetly recommend anyplace with jet ski assistance. I took a lesson with Big Winds a while back, and it was great! It will definetly speed up the learning curve as you get immediate feedback.

I cant speak for schools other than the one I have used. I have taken a few lessons with New Wind, they use beginner friendly kites and have Ski assisted lessons available to get you away from the crowds with more water time. Also they have different levels of IKO instuctors based on how much you want to pay. You also get an IKO card showing your level of completion when done. I felt very satisfied with their service but I am sure there are many other qualified options available.

No ones upset, dude. Not at all. This topic comes up everynow and then. WHen you ask it people just recommend the schools they've been to, or the ones there friends work at. Just like you'd naturally expect. Try searching the forum, and then googling the schools you find. Then decide. That's what I did for a friend. Actually, here's the email I sent him:
--Schools in the Gorge:
http://www.kitethegorge.com/

--Big Winds
http://www.bigwinds.com/wind

--New Wind. (IKO certified)
http://www.kiteschool.com/

--Kiteboard Oregon Kite School in Hood River (IKO certified)
"They also teach @ the Coast and Suavies (Island). Jimmy Dorsey (owner) is the best instructor in the NW and International Kitesurfing Organization (IKO) Level 2. Also Jim Grady and Brian are IKO certified as well as all around cool guys. They use a jet boat when the water is high, and when it is not, at the HR sandbar and will get you up & riding fast!!!
Radio Helmets provide instant feed back to give you the information you need to get up and riding fast."

--Hood River Waterplay
http://www.hoodriverwaterplay.com/

--Kite Stevenson
www.kitestevenson.com
-In Stevenson, WA. There's no beach here, so I'm not sure how you'd learn, see what they say...

I don't really know anything about these schools. If the people you talk to one the phone sound friendly, it'll probably be good. I would have recommended a place with a nice beach, but lots of dudes are talking about learning on a jetski, which sounds great too.

Good luck.

I'm sorry but the sandbar was purchased behind closed doors by the CGKA and is now closed to everyone.

Thankfully, the sand will be used to re-bulid Iraq. So, you really can't complain.

Id definitely go for a school that was going to take you out w/ jet ski support. You see all of these people on the sandbar walking back upwind, phuk that. Your time in a lesson can be much better spent on the water.

Word. You should have your trainer kite skills down when you show up as well.

Big Winds has a good program, and we use jetskies so you will avoind the sandbar, and get more water time then walking up and down the sandbar!
