Depends on the skill level of your riding. Shipwreck (Ft Stevens) is always a good easy beach if you're a beginner.

Since we are involved in half of the list, hell yes, I'll be there. If I'm not in the shop this weekend, I'll either be at the Sandbar, Dave's house, or the River City Saloon.

This will be a big burner of a weekend. Good warm up as the season opener.

Thanks
Pepi

I'll be in there too (Manzanita) Very Happy but I'm still a kookster Embarassed I was hoping to practice what I learned at the end of last season with Kite the Gorge - body draging and maybe try and get up and riding (this will be my first time out this season). Would this be a problem there Fri/Sat? Any advice?

The swell will be a bit big for beginners but it will probably be OK if you stay inside. The marine forecast is for 7ft swell on Thursday, building throughout the day to 11 ft. Thursday night.

First or second break won't be too big and it will bring your board in quickly Wink

Watch out for the waves, they can sneak up on you if you're not used to them. They'll be a good size on those days, but you can make do on the inside. Also, don't go too far North in town (close to the bluff) since wind will be more fluky especially if it's more Northerly than usual.

nice. yeah I used to surf a bit, but i still don't want to get stuck in the deep just yet with relaunching and waterstarting - I'll be sure to stay inside. I noticed usually everyone is setting up at the north end-ish, should I just head for the kite crowd for help with launching/landing?

If you've surfed that'll help for sure.

Yeah, having others around is always good. Although on occasion wind has been known to be better a bit further South.

hey even better, I'll be staying at the south end - near the state park. well, if you see a Turbo 2 and a body-dragger, it's probably me. I've never actually done a self-rescue in the water, should I save that for flat water?

This is all IMHO of course. . .

Jumbo shrimp, airline food and Big swell but ok for beginners all are oxymorons so to speak. . .

Especially at Manzo where the waves ramp up very quickly and crash (and those waves are thick translation they are not forgiving at all and you'll want your mama).

West swell tomorrow with predicted North wind is going to make it even more dicey (north wind is dirty wind at Manzo with Neahkahnie Mountain blocking it).

So if your going to try it at Manzo with the big waves, make sure your not in a rip, down south where the wind is cleaner and don't plan on people being there right away if shit hits the fan.

If your water starting, I'd go North Coast. Steadier wind and waves won't break as quickly due to the more gradual slope of the beaches.

It's crazy, but even a small wave can tear a kite up if you get unlucky. If I were practicing in the water, I wouldn't plan on dropping my kite in the surf at all. Body dragging is very important, of course, but it is tough to learn to drag upwind. I actually got frustrated trying when i was leaning, and just started water starting, and planing (but not upwind), and then went back to dragging, once I understood the wind a bit better. Mostly becuase I was anxious. Just thinking...

sounds good to me - I just thinking I had to pay my dues body-dragging a bit more, but I'd definetly rather be up and riding. I guess I can just walk back up the beach after ending up downwind... Wink

I've been kiteboarding for quite some time, surfed for a little bit, and have been KB at the coast about half a dozen times. Two weeks ago at manzo when there was stiff north winds and big swell was pretty serious business when you got out into the bigger swell.

If you haven't self rescued yet, can't fly your kite with your eyes closed, or are not a strong swimmer you may want to think twice about hitting manzo when its big.

I dipped my kite on a downloop, it got rolled, and I had to pull out of my chicken loop. The wet crumbled up mass of kite immediately started pulling me down the beach AND out to sea pretty damn quick. Trying to breath while a $1200 sea anchor is pulling you out to sea and head high waves and foam crash on your head is not all that easy or enjoyable.

Wicked fun for sure, but I was COMPLETELY spent by the time I got everything back on land.
