I keep trying but usually end up landing with no water speed and with the kite pulling me backwards. I feel like I am pulling the kite to the other side hard enough, and any more usually end up feeling like a failed "send the kite" type of jump. Are you supposed to have some water speed as you enter the transition? where is the kite when you leave the water?

I have a feeling my efforts so far look somewhat kook-ish

Just downloop the kite. You'll have enough power coming out of the turn and you won't look so kookish.

Hurricane

The water is a lot softer than rocks!!

Here's my method on an SLE kite:

You definitely want to go into it with some speed. But the goal is kill your forward speed by translating it into upwind speed (and pop) by carving hard upwind just as you send the kite. Sheet out as you edge hard, then sheet in fully just as you take off.

The send is very minimal. From 11 to 12.. maybe as far as 1 if the wind is light (but if you go this far, try to bring the kite back to 12 when you're at peak height).

The reason you don't want to send too far the other way yet is that your body will swing downwind of the kite. Then the kite is way far in the upwind edge of the window and has lost all power... lines slacken). With that said, once you are descending, you want to send the kite HARD in the new direction (starting from 12). The lift from the apparent wind will make your landing softer.

Best time to try these is when you are very powered to overpowered. In this case, you barely have to send the kite (11 to 12 is fine) and just sheet in after the upwind carve.

Here's a sample vid that Forrest got of me at Lyle last year. Sorry it doesn't show the kite, but maybe you can tell kite position by lines:

Is this what you meant by transition jumps? Hope this was of some help.

Thanks Peskiniezer. I've be wondering the same thing.

I'll try it, IF I EVER GET BACK ON THE WATER! Responsiblity really sucks somethimes, ya know? My wife keeps telling me I have all summer, but I just hate seeing good days go by, without me being able to partake Crying or Very sad .

Lately I've just gotten a couple runs in Very Happy , then time to go or wind go bye-bye Crying or Very sad .

Last time on the water though, I actually landed a transition Shocked ! Your advice really works in my head, I'll try translating it to motion.

I've switched to a 15M fs self-inflating foil, this year, from my 16M & 20M LEI's. I'll tell you if it's the same as SLE or not. I'm sure every move is the same, just with longer hangtime!

David, if you need more time on the water then quit wasting time on the beach setting up your gear...

Actually, the gear is new to me.

I've had times when everything went fine. But when I didn't downrig correctly, I rat nested.

I've started a new procedure for securing my lines. Now, I'm out on the water before the pumpies and when I get out on the water I'm not all pumped out. This will also be beneficial when the temp starts to rise.
