Mon Apr 14, 08 2:03 pm CGKA Lyle cleanup May 17 @ 11AM |
|
|
The CGKA has set a date for the Lyle Beach Clean Up for May 17th beginning at 11AM. We have endorsement from the Lyle Community Council, and have spoken with state wildlife officials about what we can and can't do. We have also established contact with the Forest Service who have been trying to develop this area into a park for many years but lacked momentum. We are the momentum.
We can clean up the logs on the sandbar, and also can cut back much of invasive indigo bushes on the beach. It would be best if we could reclaim some of the land with native species for a wind shelter and to prevent erosion. We will have a wildlife permit for this.
Dogs will not be allowed on the Lyle sandbar from April 1st through June 30th to provide nesting opportunities for birds. We need to cooperate with this as it's a policy set by the Forest Service who is a very critical entity we need to stay aligned with.
The sandbar to the east of the Klickitat is preserved for wildlife. No kiteboarding.
There will be no burning of the logs and we are going to stack them out of the way, potentially using them to improve the high water launch.
We will need chainsaws, winches, shovels, hand saws, and tons of muscle. We have a priority of cleaning up as much trash as possible. We are going to need a few boats to haul out trash on as it would not be appropriate to haul stuff across the railroad tracks repeatedly. If you have a boat that you don't mind hauling trash in please contact me via PM.
This clean up will be different than the past. The Lyle community council is trying to rally citizens of Lyle to come and help. We also will need to be very sensitive able crossing the road and the tracks. It's preferred that you carpool to reduce parking and park on the North side of the road. Do not cross the highway, cross under the car bridge by exiting the parking lot to the east and following the path.
We will be updating this post as more information becomes formalized.

As long as she fires up when we get back from TX in early may... I'll have the Mello Yello out for duty...
One boat- check
Bummer about the dogs..as lyle was always the place to go with your dog to avoid sandbar crouds.. being proactively more respectful.. but I guess if that is what it takes to be on the same side as the forest service... well... hard to argue that. _________________ Liquid Force Kiteboarding in the Pacific Northwest.

| Good luck avoiding crowds, weekends have had at least 30 people there and it's still a bit cold. Summer will be just like the sandbar. |

| we were out there on a low water day, and there really wasn't that much stuff.... the water was way out to uncover most of the stumps in the water (the sandbar was at least double in size)... I was really surprised how little of debris there was around. This may be a very short work day. |

| i was there on a low water day, waiting for wind, and dragged (rolled) in an old tire. I just left it near the flag. I figured I'd at least get it out of where we ride. |

| The problem is the birds will take flight with a dog around according to the wildlife officials. The Forest Service wants birds to be able to use the spit as a resting and nesting location. I'll have the exact dates after we meet with them in May before the clean-up. |

All volunteers at the Lyle Spit will get free admission to the River City, for the Kite Party.
And to top it off, 2nd Wind will be sponsoring the first round of drinks to all volunteers as well!
SO, make sure that, you see Forrest or myself and get on the LIST
2nd Wind has gotten so much better since the new management took over.

The CGKA met with the Lyle Community Council last night to discuss the clean-up effort and to create dialog between the city and the CGKA. The council was very receptive stating they loved watching the kites at their local beach. They asked about resources they could make available to the kite boarding community to support their economy.
We surveyed the Lyle sandbar and formulated a clean up plan. We're hoping to have the Forest Service on site the day of the clean-up to guide us in protecting wildlife habitat.
We're going to need lots of the following:
Shovels
Pruning shears
Wheel barrows
Work gloves
Weed eaters/trimmers
Hedge trimmers
Chain Saws
Rope/Straps for towing logs

I'm coming up from Portland. Anyone want to carpool and split the gas?
I'm at NE Killingsworth and MLK, but can meet anywhere in Portland or on the way.
Thanks,

Hi Guys,
Yes, 1st post, but have enjoyed learning and being entertained by this site.
Thanks Forrest for meeting with the powers that be, and getting together the
Lyle clean-up. I will be there with wheelbarrow and tools at the ready.
My question is about what time are people going to start showing up?
Thanks, B |
