There have been several comments about the Go Joe - the general concensus is that it is gay. However, it can save your board. So what do boards run - about $700 - so is it worth $700 to look gay? Laughing

If you are a beginner or uneasy about losing your board, then go for it. Its alot safer than a reel leash or board leash.

I used a reel type leash for the '06 season when I needed it badly. I used a GoJoe last spring when I was weaning myself off the leash. It seemed to be a good transitional tool as you are learning how to up-wind body drag. I can't sell or give it to you because it was an Xmas gift from my wife. Whenever I come home from the Gorge, she always has to ask: "How was your GoJoe?"

Get the gay thing. Read the book. Sell the thing for $10 in 3 months.

It may save your board, and you will be much gayer if you don't loose your board than if you do, in which case you would be not gay but sad.

Also be sure to write your name and phone number on your board with or without the gay thing.

The best thing you can do to prevent losing a board is learn to body drag early on. If you're able to ride on a board at all you should be easily able to body drag upwind.

I like the go-joe for the following reasons.

At the coast I like to find my board fast, (sharks and all), I can see the go-joe in the waves and know right where to get it.

In the Gorge, when the water is cold I do not like to spend my time in the water more than i have to.

June-Sept in the Gorge I do not use it

Less gay than a board leash for sure, but I tend to agree with Gene if you focus on learning to body drag upwind first you should be okay.

If you cant see your board in the waves it doesn't matter how well you can body drag. Looks like a good idea in the ocean for that reason alone, gay or not.
In fact ill have to look into getting one for my shark bait days.

When I see one of those on the water, I give them 30 ft of room.

Tony and I were about 20 ft apart talking in the middle of the SPI flats about 3 weeks ago and sure enough a kite tomahawked between us from an upwind kiter with a gojoe.

So my revised rule of thumb is if there is a gojoe, give 30 ft clearance unless they are up wind of you, then add another 20 ft.

You can't get mad at someone getting t-bagged with a go-joe either because clearly they have the "watch out for me" sign up and are trying!
