Missed your comment about the deep water. I like the flat water downwind of the sandbar where the Windsurfers used to have speed races. We should setup a speed course one of these weekends and time people!

I'll start the CHOOOAAADDD slug fest!

Lyle should be left as is - Debris and all Shocked . A group of us removed massive stumps left dry from the 1996 flood a few years ago (and probably shouldn't have). Its fine as is with out tide bottles. Kite upwind, hit the channel, or the speed slick. just my 2 cents Laughing

Yea, we're not pulling stumps.

Another option: Just replace the existing three clear plastic bottles that are upwind of the sandbar and don't bother with the other ones.

I think I'd prefer to see Lyle left alone, although I don't really object to Tide Bottle bouys and other improvements.

On the other hand, I'm very concerned about access. IMO, that should over-ride any desires to improve the site, or even through in-action, cause the site to be restricted. It'd be a shame if access was blocked off by the railroad or any other powers that be.

Totally Untwed, This is the primary concern and has always been. I just don't want to get impaled by a log trying to ride some of the best flat water in the gorge. You guys know you love the flat water too!

I was just thinking about seeing 18 orange buoys floating on the water and agree that'd be a bit disgusting to someone who loves the beauty of Lyle.

In discussion with a BNSF employee at lyle a few years back, he mentioned Blocking the road down to the tracks is the problem for BNSF and the work they need to conduct.

We've just started putting our fillers out to find the parties responsible for that parking area on the North side of highway 14 and access to the Lyle Sandbar in general. The City of Lyle has a huge stake here too so we're in the process of getting in touch with that party too.

Access is the number one concern here and the parking situation on the weekends always makes me cringe when I see seven cars shoe-horned into that little driveway and blocking access for the RR. This is a sure fire way to get access banned.

We need a way to self police this parking situation. I've seen the homemade sign out there and it's not working. Maybe a little note we can put on the cars explaining the situation would work?

"I have been thinking about the issue of tide bottles coming loose and I'm sure with the right type of rope, type of knot, and sealant around the lid, this won't happen."

I bet NOAA thought the same thing ....

Seriously, thanks for considering the simple "senic" aspect of the place. There are a lot of people who just like to take pictures.

So if we move the dangerous logs, then we don't need to have a bunch of orange bottles around. Seems like a good choice.

The first pic I ever saw of Lyle was from "Railgrab" on this site and was one of the prettiest pics of the Gorge I've ever seen. I don't really give two shits one way or the other, because orange tide bottles can be removed, but I've gotta say Lyle sure is pretty and it should stay pretty.

I drive to the dalles everyday for school, and see the 2 big ass bald eagles in Mosier and the fatty in Lyle. I think those logz have sumptin' to do with fish habitat and need to stay that way. Not too many eagles in HR, wonder why Shocked Leave Lyle be and go police the Rufus Launch, enough choads to go around out there on a weekend, kinda hard to swing a dead cat around by its tail without hitting one or two.

Thanks for the props Andy! One issue with big bright floats is how they will look strewn all over the sandbar when the water level is low. Here is that shot you were probably referring to from wayyy back in 2006...

Thanks everyone for your ideas!

I spoke with the a representative from the Lyle Community Council yesterday about this area. He's been working for several months already to develop this area into a Washington State Park or something similar that would be of benefit to the people of the City of Lyle. He asked how many members we had that'd be interested in a clean up... We're not alone here. We'll be getting something scheduled soon!

Anyone have any other ideas besides avoidance? Someone mentioned a small "lily" pad type of marker that would be placed on the most dangerous submerged logs. What do you guys think about something like this?

Of the logs that are there, how many are "in the way"?

I think there are only 3 logs at the moment that I would consider dangerous, and are already marked by clear plastic bottles (I can hardly see these). These three have been there since I can remember.
