continental agent opened my bag because the standard "sporting equipment" answer was obviously not satisfactory. The next answer, "skimboard" was much better, however my best golf bag was opened anyway. The boards were at the bottom of the bag and the agent didn't take the trouble to remove items to get to them and let me slide. The kites and removed straps and pump and general crap dissuaded her from a more thorough search. Thanks nwkite for the skimboard response idea! I think that was quite helpful.
According to scale my bag was 46 lbs for 2 kites and 2 boards and 1 bar and a few light weight nick nacks.
I'm posting via my phone so sorry about the off the boat engrish

I always pack a 3 piece fishing rod - they go free.
I travel with my skimboard - but I think the mention of board opens up a can of worms.
Whats in there - Fishin stuff. Kite fishin.

I just got back from Puerto Rico and flew Continental out and Delta back, no problems either way and my suitcase was even @ #55
This whole thing does add some anxiety to the normal turmoil of the airport.

Carol just made a Maui to SPI trip with our Best Golf bag and didn't have any problems. We stripped down all 4 boards and threw in the board shorts and a couple of towels. Total weight around 40 lbs. Put all of the kites, bars, harnesses, straps, fins, and clothes in normal suitcases. We were prepared to explain our skimboards in the golf bag but didn't get questioned.
I did see the board-nazi lady at the baggage carousel in Maui. She made a guy who was retrieving his luggage produce a receipt for the surfboard he had slung over his shoulder. He was just standing there minding his own business, waiting for his last bag to come out when she came up to make sure he had been charged for the surfboard. He was pretty calm about it but I think I would have told her to get lost at that point.

Mark I almost fell out of my chair with the Unicorn Nazi picture
I have no pictures of the Maui chic but I can tell you what she looks like. Very large women with a ugly angry face who hates unicorns and anyone who looks like they might be having fun. If you see her run away as fast as you can.

when at first you try to deceive…you must also play the part. ie dress like a golfer, talk like a golfer and walk like a golfer, don’t look like a surfer/kiter dude/dudette. Trust me it works…I once got away with 2 golf bags…”Yup big tournament in Cabo this weekend, I have my left handed set and my right handed set with me”

Sandy: I want you to kill every gophers on the golf course!
Carl Spackler: Correct me if I'm wrong Sandy, but if I kill all the golfers, they're gonna lock me up and throw away the key...
Sandy: Not golfers, you great fool! Gophers! The *little* *brown*, *furry* *rodents* -!
Carl Spackler: We can do that; we don't even have to have a reason. All right, let's do the same thing, but with gophers -!

I never sent it, the anger wore off and became unsure as to how much good it would have done.
