OK...
So, if you were to new to the sport and you were to get an initial setup (Kite, Board, Harness, etc), what would you get?... (for Sauvies and Gorge)

Not going to mention any brands... haha! But depending on the style of kite (C, hybrid, or bow), I'd think a 9/13 combo would be a good start. Hybrids or bows are probably your best bet, and will give ya a lot more range both up top and down low. Then there will always be days where you'll need a bigger (if you like riding really light wind) and smaller kite.
Board wise, something in the 130-140ish range.

Your first quiver is really dependent on a lot of things. How often do you want to kite? Do you want to be able to kite in all conditions? You said you wanted to be able to kite at the gorge and sauvie's. Well - that means you get a wind range from like 8 knots (barely able to keep your kite up) to winds gusting into 45 knots (barely able to keep yourself from getting blown away).
A 9m and a 13M bow kite would be a good start for a quiver. I would recommend going with a 151 board. The 151 board is going to be easier to start on and can be used at Sauvie's and the gorge - its not going to be a great light wind or heavy wind board - but it will handle fine. You can pick up other boards as you progress.
A 9/13 quiver would be pretty good - you woul have a hard time kiting in really light winds and you couldn't go out in really heavy winds. THere are plenty of days and locations where you could use your quiver - you would just have to check on the winds before you head out.
Bow kites - generally, have more wind range than C Kites and can handle the gusts of wind much better.
C Kites - generally, are more stable (less succeptible to directional shifts in the wind), but don't have the wind range.
Bow kites may be the way to go for a beginner - they can be safer, you can dump most of the power if you get into a tight spot by pushing the bary all the way away from you. And they do give you a better wind range - so you don't need as many kites.

Terromoto is right on but I think I would get a board in the 135-138 range. Don't obsess to much over the kite purchases, as long as you have kites newer than 06 you should be good to go. Spend the money and get a quality board that you will want to ride for some time. Don't waste your money on a beginner board, you will outgrow it quickly and if you really want one I can give you a big old slingshot drake I have.
Boards that I would look at if I were you... Jimmy lewis model III 139, Nobile 555 138?, if you can find one, caution redline 142, slingshot SX 137 (except 06 model). I love my JL and have never meant anyone that has one and didn't like it.
Spend all your money on your "gorge" and windy sauvie day board. Then make a plywood "glide" or go to this supposed board build party and make yourself a light wind board.
Above all else, do whatever it takes to get out on the water!

| 9/13 combo is great. I can use my 13 fuel in an amazing range of conditions . I'd look into a board somewhere in the 130's too, because of how spendy kiteboards can be it may be better to buy something you're going to progress into.

| i couldn't agree more that the '07 13m fuel has the most amazing range of any C kite i've ever flown. i seriously think my range for that kite is around 12 - 32mph.

hello all...
I really appreciate the input... I've got some direction now on what to keep my eyes out for a deal... I was out scouting the gorge today... Most dudes were on 7m's it looked like... I watched a guy launch a 10m and get lifted... I definately see the need to have an expansive quiver... In the future... 2nd wind had some fuel kites one 13m... What do you think about a newbie having a rev? Is that too much kite? I'll check the forum for a ply'glide board...
Perspective: So I've been a surfer for 10 years... Its always been a solitary endevor, Today I watched the way other boarders help each other land their kites... Really cool...

| I really think any beginner would like a REV better than a FUEL. Making the switch from FUELs ('05-07s) to REVs was one of the best things for me (as far as progression goes). Not only do they relaunch easier, but with more depower you'll probably feel a little more comfortable riding Gorge like conditions. Don't get me wrong though, the '07 FUELs have a huge range for a C-kite, but they don't come close to the REVs.
