You can always try the Slingshot Golf bag.

No one at the airlines has a clue about Slingshot and Nike Golf even has some clubs called the Slingshot.

Phil got charged using that bag but he was behind me in line originally so she may have just figured out he was with me.

Doubt its the logo on the bag. Seems its more the attitude of the person checking in and probably more important the airline rep. Sounds like we also have a "bad" rep working for Continental here in Portland. Friends curb checked in a bag only to be busted down at the gate! Were told to pay up or leave the bag.

Time for a board that comes apart for travel. That way there will be no issues.

That's odd because this is there policy from their website..

"Kiteboard
Continental Airlines will accept one kiteboard or one bag containing equipment used in kiteboarding as checked baggage."

Agents can get it wrong. That's why you want to print out the page from their website if it helps your case... Continental may have just changed this. Last time I checked, Continental charged for kiteboarding gear. If they have changed it for the better, probably a good idea to email them and let them know you apreciate the change & will fly Continental in the future.

from their website:
If the kiteboard/kiteboard container is over 50 lbs (23kg) and/or 62 (157 cm) total linear inches (L + W + H), a $95 service charge applies each way. The service charge is in addition to any excess baggage charges that may apply.

Thats the problem... Again if we had a board that was able to be "broken down" into smaller pieces, we wouldn't have any problems.

I am looking for a travel bag (the NSI I used to Maui was borrowed). Is the large Mystic bag over the size limit? Are there any other bags that may be over the size limit that I should stay away from?

Check the websites of the airlines you may want to fly for size retrictions. Of course, this may all be moot with United changing to only 1 free piece of luggage... If all of the other airlines follow suit, it just won't matter anymore. Sad

It doesn't really matter what brand NSI, Slingshot, Naish... they opened all of our bags, and we checked in at different counters. After flying for the last 5 years with kiting gear, one thing has always been true: My bag was never opened to verify the contents by the check-in agent. That changed on this trip.

Back on Naish vs. Slingshot vs. NSI... I have a Slingshot bag and still got charged, but for Hawaii I think Naish is really a huge red flag. Anyone who has lived in Hawaii more than a few years would know Naish = Windsurfing. His name has been around for 30 years, and is plastered all around town.

The NSI bag is not nearly as nice as the Naish and Slingshot ones, but may be more stealth overall. Better yet get an actual golf bag. Trevor has one that's even bigger than the kite golf bags.

We got nailed last year leaving Cozumel and charged for 2 bags and now we stack every board we take into 1 bag. At least if we get hit now, its only for one bag.

To LaV for Tony, Becca & I, we striped down 7 boards and stacked them into 1 regular Best golf bag: 2 Spleens, 3 Best drives (121 and 125's) and 2 135 Best floats. Came in at 50 lbs. exactly.

So if you are traveling in pairs or groups, stack them and use only 1 bag.

Less people in a row in line with golf bags may help too.

Cool

This is a step inthe right direction. This policy has actually changed lately...this is one of the airlines that I have sent emails, and had LONG email exhanges with. Demanding to get in contact with management. Maybe it works?

I think if you put your board in a golfbag, and keep it under 50lb, they will not charge for it...but I agree..they could have made it better.

Anyhoo,
A.

Well maybe games up. It was a matter of time, but it still bothers me that bags they can treat exactly the way they would treat golf gear is charged for, and often the bag is smaller.

I will write Hawaiian about this policy. It is simply not good enough. They are a small comany with a lot of competition and they should appreciate and respect customers more.

The lady is a tramp.

The more we rant and rave about it to the airlines-- the more problematic it will be for everyone--everywhere. Pointing out that these are "FAKE" golf bags will really screw it up for us all. Is getting your $80 dollars back really worth it down the road?

I have changed how I pack my gear now. On the last trip we took to LV, we packed one regular bag from REI with all of our kites. I essentially wrapped them all together and used a squish type vacuum bag. This would have no red flags at all, because it is just a regular non-oversized piece of luggage.

For the boards, I have a flat board bag that is large enough to fit the glide. I think it is the Dakine bag. I pack it with all of our boards, stripped down with no fins or pads on them. Then I stuff it with other gear to get it as close to 50lbs as possible. Because it isn't super wide it doesn't break any of the dimension regs typically. If anyone asks whats in the bag I just say skimboards. Almost all airlines don't cahrge for skimboards, so you shouldn't have an issue there.

When I flew to Florida I vacuumed all my kites and put them in a suitcase. I shoved my SS Fuse down my pants so that I could just carry it on.

The lady at the counter was a little suspect but when I told her I was PDX monkeyboy, she understood that I was just uber hung and let me on no problems.

I know most of you have already purchased these bags, but why don't in the future we just use a Nike or Callahan golf bag. Put on a polo shirt and visor and sell out to the man for $160 round trip and less hassel. It seems worth it to me.

I know I might get shreded on this, but it is just a thouhgt.

I didn't say anything about "FAKE" golf bags. What is a "FAKE" golf bag anyway? You can use real golf bags too. I've seen ones that are bigger than the "fake" ones.

Anyway I haven't sent in the letter yet, but I do want to send something in. I think this is BS. Kraemer you can give me $160 and I'll reconsider. Razz

Fake golf bags-- (you just said you have a naish one) It's a kiteboarders secret, or at least is was... my point is don't bring attention to the fact you have a "golf" bag stuffed with kiteboarding gear -- we wouldn't want anyone from hawaiian airlines to be a whistle blower about this "trick" to their company or any other airlines.
