What kind of stuff is aquaseal? does it glue the two pieces together or fuse them together?

Aquaseal is the wetsuit repair glue right? Pretty sure it's polyurethane. Does good on wetsuits at least! It seems to attempt to melt the material, but it's not as strong as the original stuff under stress if you're using it to bridge a gap. I did the calves on a wetsuit and they ripped out again after 10 or so times.

I think it's always going to curl some as the glue dissolves the bottom of the patch, but not the top.
Did the patches already stick on them - I think that helps? Then put a thin layer of glue on the back of that. You might want to put a weight on top of the patch too...

Might mention, if it falls off it's the wrong material - ie if you just cut up a piece of packing material that looks the same as your bladder, you may have a problem - wouldn't know anything about that myself of course...

kitezilla, how did you manage to keep the patch from curling up after applying the glue. I repaired one of my kite bladders and as soon as I applied the glue, the entire patch shriveled up (it was the glue supplied with the kite too), it was a complete nightmare to fix that hole. The glue was polyurethane dissolved in MEK, so I'm sure that had something to do with it. What kind of stuff is aquaseal? does it glue the two pieces together or fuse them together?

The nice thing about Aquaseal is that it doesn't curl up the patch. It is thicker and is of the consistency of Vaseline. You only need to squeeze out about a eighth inch wide line of it. When you put some pressure on it, that amount will squish out to about 3/4 of an inch.

Aquaseal is a glue and does not dissolve and fuse the patch or the bladder, as does something like PVC cement. Alcohol will actually dissolve the cured Aquaseal, if you really work at it. I have replaced the neck gaskets on a few dry suits using Aquaseal, and the technique involves using alcohol and blunt dissection to remove the old neck seal material. A lot of latex neck, wrist and ankle seals on dry suits are glued on at the factory using Aquaseal, and can be peeled off by using alcohol. In the case of a dry suit, the Aquaseal glues latex rubber to the sealed nylon fabric of the suit. So, Aquaseal is a very versatile and reasonably priced glue for use in water sports. It stays flexible through out its life, unlike the cheaper glues like Shoe Goo, which harden. It is not good to use on wet suit material, as it is not stretchy enough, even though it is flexible.

Replacing the neck gasket on a dry suit is really challenging compared to the much simpler repair of a burst kite bladder. It is worth paying someone to do the neck gasket, otherwise you will be shopping for just the right size traffic cone, manikin, or lamp shade to support the fabric while you work with the gasket.

The only thing better than Aquaseal for bladder repair is a German product called Pattex, which can not be shipped to the US, since it is so toxic. Pattex does not take 8 hours to set up. Someone you know would have to bring it from Germany to the US. It may be possible to buy it in Canada, but I can't guarantee that. Pattex will glue even kite fabric together. I would use it in a well ventilated room, although that is a good idea with Aquaseal also.

You can buy an accelerator to be used to speed up the set of Aquaseal, but I have not used it. It is called Cotol, and I think it would shorten the 8 hour waiting period to about an hour or so.

Here are the pictures of the 2 products you will find at the kayak, windsurf or wetsuit store. The product that you want to buy for bladder repair is the one I am holding in my hand. The product you may want for a wetsuit repair may be the Seal Cement, which is also made by Aquaseal, shown in the green package, although you would be better off going to Promotion and getting the product they sell there, along with some advice. They have a rubber cement, which I have used to glue on knee patches.
