**** THIS IS NOT AN ORGANIZED EVENT; NO SPONSORS, NO EVENT PERSONAL, JUST A BIG GROUP OF FRIENDS SNOWKITING THIS WEEKEND!!!! ****************************************************************************

Due to Federal Forest Service polices we have not been granted permission to hold any organized "event" in MSH National Park. However, there is nothing wrong with gathering together for a "freeride"!

The past two years we have been skunked by foul weather (pineapple expresses). However, with one of the deepest snow pack in recent history this year could live up to the original named

…………………....Kite Explosion!

 Due to the access 5-7 mile snow machine (Or Solid 1 1/2 AT/Splitboard skin) Makes this an intermediate riding (due to it’s remoteness)

 The intended riding area would be between the Lahar and the Plains of Abhram on the SE face of the mountain.

 Staging Access (Overnight Car Camping) are located at the Marble Mont Sno-park (Snopark permits are required)

Map

http://www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/04maps/files/mshrec.jpg

When: March 15th-16th 10:30 AM

Where: Mount St Helens, WA (Marble Mont Sno park)

Who: You sucker!

What you should expect:

No transportation to riding area, so organize a snowmobile or plan to hike in!!!, There may be a few kiter’s there with snowmobile’s but please do not count solely on them.

On the mountain: Upper Alpine (above tree line) exposed Avalanche terrain.

After party: BYOB BBQ and Spirits. (Marble Mont has an open to public warming cabin with fireplace and a 75 person capacity)

Sunday: Much of the same!

Due to St. Helen’s imperative forecast conditions, please check this post several days before leaving to this “Freeride Session”

The road in is totally cool, I can pull a trailer of 5000 lbs or less... I know there are a few people that'd be down to rent sleds with ya Diggy... Maybe even offer up a few tows in for $30 to offset the cost of rentals...

Hopefully they get to work on that road in the near future- I've been after some turns in the area, but the FS websites suggest access is cut off pretty far from the snowpark:

February 20, 2008

Snow Depth: Snowpark is CLOSED until further notice due to heavy snowfall and downed trees. Information on discontinued plowing and status of the Washington State Sno-Park program.

Rating/Remarks: 10 feet of snow. Conditions are poor due to deep, unpacked snow and downed trees. Forecasts call for additional snowfall, warming temperatures and rain, so please exercise caution when traveling on forest roads. Check website for current avalanche information. A temporary bridge has been constructed across the creek at the June lake trailhead. Barriers are in place to the right of bridge at 83 Road washout. Forest Road 8312 is closed to snowmobiling, a barrier 1/4 mile up 8312 Road marks the washout.

Road Information: Forest Road 83 is CLOSED at 90 junction. Travel to 83/90 junction is not recommended. Parking is very limited with few places to turn around. Compact snow and ice. Traction devices are required.

Here's hoping for some speedy plow work!

the extra few miles from town is nothing when on a sled. however the warm temps don't sound fun.bullet proof mornings and slushy afternoons.

seems like spring

The big problem is elevation. Most local two stroke sleds are jetted for 3500 to 7000'. Dropping to Cougar, which is about 800' can lead to meltdown.

Yeah it can be a mess!
(cant get to mapquest right now...) look up cougar washington.

If you have to start in cougar you are looking at least 20 or more miles....

No wind links that I am aware of.

She's a backcountry mistress.... Think Sauvie's only colder! Laughing
