PostSun Feb 03, 08 2:03 pm    Waist Harness Reply with quote

I just bought a Dakine Tabu waist harness and I don't think I like it. I am wondering if all waist harnesses ride up or if just the cheaper ones do. The way you cinch it down it seems like you don't get it as tight as you could if it was set up differently. I am used to the Dakine boardshorts, but I like the idea of being able to take off my harness without taking off my shorts.

Anyway I think I am going to take the Tabu back, but I'm wondering if I shouldn't give up on a waist harness just yet.

I have a Dakine waist it also rides up, I have the mystic warrior coming, I tried it down in La Ventana, it has a lower strap that keeps it from going up, also it is super comfortable.

I have the Tabu so at least I can say it doesn't ride up any worse than any other waist harness.

My approach is to have it as tight as I can stand it when I put it on dry before the session. When it gets wet and has the pull of the kite then it doesn't feel so tight but it should not ride up too bad. Also, avoiding flying the kite straight up help too

As someone who has sported a beer belly or two, I can tell you they don't help with harness ride up either!

Not sure if any of this helps but that's my 2 cents. I like the Tabu because it's one of the only harnesses that is smooth on the inside so it slides around for easier toe side riding and wave riding.

scribble,

i know we talked briefly about this, i didnt realize you had the tabu,....worst harness i ever tried Mad . I switched to the mystic warrior and like wytcap said, its really comfortable. The mystic may have been what led to my bruised ribs, but i still prefer it over any other waist harness.

which reminds me,....Medium 2007 tabu waist harness for sale, used twice....50.00 Wink

Well I just ordered a mystic warrior. I'm headed to return the Tabu tomorrow, hopefully.

I ride the tabu and like it. I think riding posture seems to make the biggest difference for me.

i have a dakine impact harness, never once rode up on me, super comfy, especially on hard falls, plus it has some extra flotation

Sol, what was it you didn't like about the Tabu?

first,
my riding posture is used to a seat harness. So after getting the hang of keeping my back straight i had to deal with the newly used muscles burning intensely....after twenty minutes i couldnt ride anymore.

also, It seemed like no matter how tight i got it, it would ride up and then became extremly hard to breathe. So i changed the spreader bar to the dakine one that has the swivel/o-ring pivoting hook thing, and a pad. It helped a lot, but still was uncomfortable and made my sessions really short. I kept blaming my shape,...i have an inverted sternum(ever see one?) there rather unique and i dont think harnesses are designed for some freak oddball.

the mystic did not dig into my ribs, mainly because the pads fit snuggly under my ribcage, the tabu kept putting pressure right on the same spot untill it was unbearable.

i sure it has a lot to do with a person's shape?

when i first got my tabu i didn't like it at all. after riding it for a while and finally stretching it out and breaking it in, i think it is great, i dont have any problem with it riding up.

i think the only time it ever rode up on me, was down in baja, i was body dragging for about 40 minutes to get my board back and it had gotten up over my ribs; it was also easily fixable tho, just float on my back and push the harness back down below my ribs.

i find that if you can cinch the power belt down in under your ribs, then it shouldn't slide, it should lift you up. The power belt can easily hold 185 lbs if it is tightened in under your ribs correctly. All waist harnesses are going to lift you up or ride up which is why riding position and posture as well as kite position are extremely important. just my $0.02

Just be careful with the Mystics. Don't get my wrong because I love the look/feel of my '07 Warrior (had it for a little over a year now), but watch it when you take a hard hit, especially hooked in. Out of the closer guys I ride with (that have them), I think there's only 1 or 2 that haven't gotten a bad rib hit. I know more than a few of us that were off the water for a month or so because of this. Maybe it's the Warrior, maybe not...

forgot, I also have the dakine pivot bar with a spreader bar pad, all these things combine to make it super comfy. And trust me, I have taken many hard hits hooked in, and have never had rib injuries or soreness.

I know you already got a new harness andy, but I just thought I would toss in my vote on a great waist harness that cinches down tight, is very comfy and doesn't ride up. The north styler. Razz
