I'm going coastal given George's forecast. I expect we'll get at least a good coastal downwinder day out of Saturday, if not Sunday as well. I may hedge a bit though and plan on coming back for easterlies at 'da rock or Stevenson on Sunday.

Most times I go to the coast, I waite to decide where to go after I get there. I like to check-out the pager readings, and also get input from friends. Sometimes if the pager isn't receiving info I'll call a friend who can go online and access the data.

I hope to either go to the south jetty at Astoria or go Manhattan Beach (just south of Nehalem Bay) and downwind to the north jetty of Tillimook Bay. There's also the standby of Road's End in Lincoln City to the Siuslaw mouth.

can you drive on the beach for this section? why do you start here instead of closer to manzanita?

If you downwind from Manzanita to the north jetty of Tillamook Bay, there is about a mile of beach which is the Nehalem Bay spit. There's no road access to that section which makes an aborted downwinder no fun. Once you're past the spit section, you must cross the Nehalem Bay bar. Although I've done it before, it's not a section of water that I'm in a hurry to get back-to. Another disadvantage to downwinding from Manzanita is that Hwy 101 runs inland just south of Manzanita and does not get back to the beach for a few miles. ...Almost forgot, you can't drive on the beach in any of this section either.

The beauty of Manhattan Beach to the south jetty of Tillamook Bay is that you end-up at Barview Park where there's camping and hot showers. Good stuff.

After checking the map, it looks like the no-mans-land of the Nehalem Bay spit is at least 2 miles long. Also, although the turnoff from hwy 101 is marked Manhattan Beach, the place that we usually launch is north and is called Nedonna Beach.

Downwinders from Manz to the south parking lot at Nehalem Bay St. Park is a pretty fun one too, 2-1/2-3 miles. I've done a few double features there and felt plenty satisfied. Better bars, restaurants than Barview. Hot showers in the park there too. Have fun!
