Man drowns in Lake Washington
A kite boarder was found floating face down in Lake Washington about one-half mile from the Kirkland marina during the wind storm.
A Seattle police patrol boat found the Seattle man after police received emergency calls at 5:30 p.m. from another kite boarder. He told police he was watching as the other kite boarder was being dragged north by the gusting wind.
Officer Jeff Kappel says when rescuers pulled the man from the water, he was unresponsive and not breathing. |

Kite boarder dies after gust hits Lake Washington |

One of the most serious emergency calls came at 5:30 p.m. from a Lake Washington kite boarder who watched as another boarder was dragged north by the gusting wind.
A Seattle police patrol boat found the 44-year-old boarder floating face down about half a mile from the Kirkland marina, Officer Jeff Kappel said. When rescuers pulled the Seattle man from the water he was unresponsive and not breathing.
Police aboard the Harbor Patrol boat performed CPR on the man, as did medics who rushed him to Harborview Medical Center. Fire Department spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick said the man did not regain consciousness on the trip to the hospital.
Stowing his gear at Magnuson Park just before sundown, kite boarder Larry Breuer said the thoughts and prayers of the rest of the boarders were with the victim and his family.
Breuer, who's been in the sport nearly a year, was one of a number of boarders out on Lake Washington as the wind picked up Thursday afternoon. He said sustained wind speeds were not particularly severe, but that some gusts might have topped 40 mph.
"When you're out there, you're one with the environment," Breuer said. |

Very unfortunate indeed. I've read whatever I could so far, but not many details--even on the Seattle kite forum. What type and size of kite? How many yrs had he been kiting/riding. Was he tea-bagged and hit his head? Was he wearing a helmet? How many others were on the water when this happened? Was it overconfidence in his gear and or ability? If others were out on the water at the same time, did they too get pummeled by the same gust/gusts?
Not trying to be a "rubberneck" so to speak, just trying to make sense of the occurrence so this doesn't happen to me and or others again.
My condolences go out to his family. |

Very sad indeed!
This is a tragic reminder to all of us that gusty squally weather is very unpredictable and extreme caution needs to be taken when kiting in these conditions.
Condolences to family and friends. ~Dan |

My best wishes go out to Dan and his family. I just talked to Jim Bison who was a best friend and knew Dan from before kiting on Crystal Mountain. Jim talked about Dan's accomplishments as fighter and commercial pilot, sailor, and outdoorsmen.
This is a very somber time, people die in this sport but not often this close to home. Jim and I couldn't recall there ever being a kiteboarding fatality before in the Pacific NW. This is amazing considering the sheer number of kiters and extreme conditions we experience here.
A few of the details of what happened... Using a borrowed 7m SLE kite... Inadvertent backroll kiteloop where Dan was 15 feet up and level with his kite.. Came down hard on his head/back... Afterwards the kite came up to neutral and then drifted to one side and started pulling Dan to the opposite shore from launch. Witnesses pretty sure the impact is was what did it (knocked out then drown.)
Before everyone attempts to pick apart the details of the tragedy though, lets all be respectful to Dan and his friends and family and just send our condolences at this time. |

Wow, really sad to hear that. Condolences to Dan's friends and family.
Be careful out there, especially in the stormy weather we're getting now. |

My most heartfelt condolences to Dan's friends and family. To Dan I say, we will miss you, everyone in the kiting community and your brothers in arms from military aviation. I salute you.

Sorry to hear. Typical Kiteforum; know-it-alls going off about who takes a bigger "impact" and the physics involved... |

Rick Iossi's kiteboard accident reviews are actually quite valuable.
I've been reading his posts since 2001 and strongly appreciate the time he takes to pull information together. Knowledge is power. His posts are long, detailed and time consuming. It's great someone like him volunteers to do this for the community.
Like on all forums, you have to separate the 'know it all's going off' (as you put it), from Rick's (or anyone's) fact posting (e.g. witness accounts, photos, wind graphs, articles, etc.)
Just my humble opinion.
