I hear ya Forrest. Meadows on the weekend demands full on weasel mode to work thru lift lines.

Plenty of natural features in the bc.

Anyone remember "La Nina Ninety Nine-dia" ? Amazing la nina season--

I called the pimps up at Meadows. '95 was the year that opened before Halloween and stayed open, no closing.

Has Timberline improved their parks over the last few years or something? I used to ride there years ago and the park was by Stormin Norman (aka pretty flat run) and you always had to haul ass the entire way through to keep your speed for the jumps. Also, the jumps weren't too big either. Meadows seems to have better jumps and halfpipe, but I haven't been to T-line lately.

So for going in the bc it sounds like each person needs their own snowmobile. Any point in sharing a purchase then? (I'm still thinking about it Forrest). I'd like to check it out once or twice before buying one so I can see what the snow kiting's like for myself and figure out if the extra dough is worth it. In order to do this do we pretty much need to rent snowmobiles or can some of the veterans take someone along for a case of beer and gas money? Either way I'd be stoked to tag along once the snow base is there.

Getting in the bc is way quicker if everyone is on the own sled. I've towed plenty of people back to the plains w/ a wakeboard rope; its totally doable, but its 10+ miles back there.

I was thinking about sharing as well, but I think this only works if you're going in a group. It's not wise to go into the BC alone, that is with no other sleds around to help if yours breaks down. This means that I will probably be buying two and it will take me just a little longer to get one.

There are several people interested in getting sleds. It's possible that we could organize a group thing where we buy two, then time share them. On days when more than 4 people want to go up we could make multiple runs.

Gene, don't forget about just BC snowboarding as well. Sleds are good for that too! Smile

Well, if size is what you're into, You need to hit the park on the west side of Stormin Norman. Their halfpipe remains small but I think it's a pretty fun size. The one thing Meadows doesn't do is change their rails. Timberline is always changin up their rails. Rails get boring fast if they're always the same, specially when the in-runs are all foobared and no one takes care of them. Also, there is the philosophical difference of Meadow's main reason for building parks to coral the kids where Timberline builds awesome parks because it's really all they have to offer.

Every place is different and tries their best but at least Timberline's parks get featured in snowboard Videos.

Aren't the parks featured in snowboard vids usually from the summer at Timberline? I guess I'm just trying to figure out which pass to get. I've been riding at Tahoe for the past several years so don't know how annoying and crowded Meadows is on the weekends nowadays or the size and flatness of Timberline's parks anymore. I'll probably be able to ride a good number of weekdays before I start my job so crowds should be avoidable at least part of the time. Plus Meadows has way more steep terrain than T-line in the winter. While I like hitting rails I don't usually do it too much since it screws up your edges pretty badly and I only have one deck that's not broken at a time.

So how do people snowboard in the backcountry with snowmobiles? Sounds like taking two people on one sled isn't ideal and I'm sure getting to higher elevations makes it even harder. Or do you drive somewhere and then do some hiking?

For most people the choice b/t meadows & t line is a no brainer. The terrain does not come close to comparing, but meadows is def. a trainwreck on the weekend.

I had a meadows and a skibowl pass, and I'm going for both again this winter. When snow levels are low, ski bowl has sick terrain and no one is there (@ least at night & thats when I rode there most.

The best sled accessible bc riding that I know of is further south.

Gene, if you can ride during the week, go for Meadows. You'll have a blast and the weekends are a good time to hike a rail. I don't have any problems with my edges getting messed up unless I mess up on scary big rails.

I still need to do some research on the BC. Lots of people I've talked to with sleds talked about hitting bowls on Mt Hood and Mt Adams.

don't you mean the ice that is formed at night after everybody chops up the slush all day?

don't get me wrong, i ride the bowl more than anywhere else, but pow can be quite rare.
you just have to get used to that choppy ice and/or manky snot that is there most days Very Happy Very Happy

Yeah, I was planning on doing Meadows. Just didn't know how bad the crowds have gotten. Thanks for the info guys.

Forrest, I don't mean my edges get bent or anything. It's just pretty easy to turn a sharp edge into a scraggly one if you're not careful on rails.

You guys better keep the good bc spots secret or the swarms of kooks are gonna come and ruin it for everyone Wink

You guys should DO the snow-kite thing before investing a lot of dough in it.
kinda like demoing kites
For me it's nice skippiing the lift and having the wind at my back ,
bluebird in 3 feet of overnight pow at Skyline ,
,,,,all day no ass time ,
but when the wind picks up -12.0 ,it's gusty and SHIFTY
But unless a revived interest in tricks or a new one in kite-soaring
a little like mowing the lawn
