In the off-season hotels are dirt cheap ($40 a night for 3 star hotels.) Use Orbitz.com and look around for good rates.

Only time to avoid is Spring Break (March.) The island is a madhouse around this time, the rest of the time it's a ghost town. Oct, Nov, Feb, April all are good months.

Bring every kite you got... and a good book. It's sooo boring with no wind.

Good luck! Thumb's Up

Looks like I'll be there late Oct with a couple of friends. If anyone else is going around that time let's hook up, if there's no wind at least it's not going to be that boring. Send a PM..

azello,
I just booked flights 10/22-10/29

Have not completed room booking yet,
depends on how many "'Utah" kiters end up going
Some of the places I have been looking at are on the Gulf side
I understand we can rig on the beach and kite the Gulf
in front of the rooms, Sounds like fun.
Some beginners that may go with us will kite the "flats"
Laguna Madre
We will to, just depends on the day.

Hope for wind

I met some of you NW kiters at the Gorge and the Coast this summer.
Maybe some of you will come to Utah for snowkiting this year.

Keep this thread going, maybe we can have a group session, or something.

Full moon is on October 17th. It's a good bet that it will be windy
around that time. A night session under the light of the moon would
be bonus.

See ya'll down there.

Marty, are you flying to San Antonio? And then renting a car there?

We fly to Harlingen, TX
40 mi to Padre

But a cheeper flight to Houston,
or other major, isn't a bad idea,
Depends on airfare from your area
We bought airfare early enough
that we may be able to get an extra
afternoon/early morning? session in,
instead of driving for hours.

We are thinking we may stay here:

http://www.padresouth.com/INDEX.htm

On the beach/Kitchens
$54 for 2 bed
$115 for 2 bedroom suite (4 beds/kitchen)

Depending on how many of us are going.

heya,
man, i like this thread. i did padre last march just after spring freak, and it was epic. i may be in for october, the idea of a nightime full moon uprising sounds epic.

we flew into harlingen, continental is running there at about $320 rt. what do you cats say about getting together on a rental car and saving some serious bucks?

a thought on lodging: la quinta is the northern most lodging on spi, a bit upscale (if anything on spi is upscale-the land of the 14ft concrete shark and ice cream cone-kind of like depoe bay on steroids), but if you bag the right room you can see the kites as they launch up on the north flats and one can go off the sand behid the motel for salty down winders back into town.

jimbo,
La Quinta was our second choice,
but the kitchen was the deciding factor for the Padre South Hotel. 10/22-10/29
We are all full with the car already, but that is just us "Utah kiters"
but lets jam in, and share rides for some downwinders.

Pray for wind!!!

We paid $309 for our airfare from SLC to HRL

from your other post, looks like we are the same age.

Nate that's exactly the dates we're planning to go. We have a "meeting" today to mull over the details, but the dates are pretty much set. I'll update later.
