Glad you had some wind. I was looking at the wind graphs
and it didn't look that great. Maybe the sensor is sticking.

Did you ride Holly or was it mostly north wind at the flats?

Been some wind here too but a little cooler.

Almost always at Holly... that 2-3mph thermal boost on the NE and SE days made all the difference. I think we got 2 downwinders in the waves, and 2-3 days at the flats, also with downwinders. Holly was the spot on the days when the IWindsurf sensor didn't get average over 13 mph.

Holly Beach... Too bad that perfect wind and flat water conditions are mixed with stinky mud, broken glass, and stingrays. There's so many dead fish on the beach from red tide... its like launching from a compost heap. Very Happy

Don't forget the numerous cactus & broken glass at the "beach".
Was the wind better than big kite when you were there?

Yeah my 13m was as big as I needed to go the whole trip. Wink

We had about 4 days where the wind got to 18mph or more, though sometimes it was just for a brief period. The other 3 kiteable days were best on the skim or glide.

Generally how is the wind in April? I am loosely planning on going then. Has the water started to warm? Or am I going to need a shorty?

thanks

April and May are supposed to be the best months, much better than the fall ones. I think a few of us are interested in heading back then for at least a long weekend.

Not sure about the warmth that time of year... all I can say is that when we went it varied greatly when the north winds were blowing. Pretty much the whole time we were in just shorts, with 80 degree water temps. But the last day when the north wind was cooking (as shown in graph above) it was really cold, like below 60... so that's when you will want the fullsuit. Best thing is to figure out how to bring all of your gear, small kites, big kites, small boards, big boards, wetsuits, etc..

I see that Southwest flys into south Padre. Which is good because I have some free trips with them. But, It looks like you may have to have a days layover to get there..... Has anyone else taken Southwest from Portland to South padre?

Ps A long weekend is what I have in mind.

It's velvet - just like the ride.

When I'm in Texas I'm gonna
have it painted with a portait
of the King.

The wind is blowin
and

quickest way on SW is to catch
a late morning flight PDX-PHX-SAT or
PDX-PHX-HOU. Look for the ones with
one stop.

Then fly into Harlingen early evening

HOU-HRL is the last flight into HR L so
that one's not hard to get. There is no
direct flight so you have to book 2.

I once ran to the end of the jetway in HOU
just to see the pilot go by as the plane was
backing out. I made eye contact with him
and he pulled back in to let me on. Luck!

With SW you can fly unlimited for 24hours
on 1 pass so that should get you there.

Does take all of one day to get there.

-Hein

P.S. SW will be flying into Denver in 2006
so that might help.

P.S.S Just saw the SW is going to Maui
from select cities like Salt Lake. All the
flights go thru PHX but there is no flight
from PHX itself. PHX is the SW hub

Thanks for the info. I have also talked to SW and they said it can be done but takes 10-12 hours. I will wait and see.

I do need to talk to you about a bigger board though. I will email later.

heya mates,
just rolled in from 10 nights at spi, had a blast. iknow this is beginner stuff for a lot of you, but yesterday was a breakthrough day, rode back to the exact piece of real estate i rode away from, i was totally stoked.

as for air service, do not forget to check continental's service into brownsville: closer to spi by 10-15 miles than harlingen, and no southwest cattle car crap. rates are often cheaper as well.

i was down there in april, if the winds are ne a shorty can be nice. rates are cheap. we stayed at the la quinta, you can see the south flats from your balcany, $58.00 a night plus tax includes room, breakfast and believe it or not, two free beers and nachos at happy hour. Very Happy

ride on,

jimbo Very Happy

Sounds like a fun trip. Would you recommend SPI sometime around April?

Is there any junk in the water from the Hurricanes?

heya bill,

last april when we were there the wind blew about for 6-7/10 days on the island. no problems in the water w/hurricanes, although the locals say the season has made winds less reliable this fall.

some random thoughts about spi:
1. buy booties if you do not have them if you walk at all in the laguna madre; shells are killer sharp and there is some random stuff in the water
2. bring a couple of good books for off wind days, there is some fishing on the island and surrounding waters in the gulf, and some golf nearby but that is about it for nonwind sports
3. on spring break all hell breaks loose, room and other rates go through the roof. i would check my dates carefully.
4. downwinders from the south flats to the north flats during se days are fun. reverse the run for ne days. holly is a toilet but has the steadiest wind on the island. downwinders in the waves are good too, i hear, if you have the cred.
