Anyone care to share how much different the weather (air & water temp., wind, etc.) is around mid December? Still trying to figure out where to kite over Winter break. Thanks in advance!

I think it gets pretty chilly right in the middle of the winter (last year it even snowed one day, no shit!) and probably plenty of rain, but from the wind archives it looks like it was pretty windy in December.

Cool, thanks for the little heads up.

And not to jack this topic or anything, but where (not too far out of the U.S. if possible) do you think we'd find the best conditions (same stuff as before) around that time?

Here's a webcam you can use to check the surf:

Hein,
How about the Red Tide?
Is it only affecting the gulf,
not the Laguna Madre?

what is the link to the webcam?

Don't know about the red tide. I think it only effects
you when you eat certain kinds of seafood and/or
have a weak immune system. I wouldn't worry.

Here's the page where I stole the link to the webcam:

http://www.spadre.com/surfcam.htm

Think I'm going to poke a flag in that dune when
I'm down there.

Looks ugly today.

Well, we're going to Hatteras instead Shocked

Turned out to be quite a bit cheaper and more convinient, mainly due to ticket prices and lots of stopovers.

What's your ticket price? Mine cost around $350... Continental PDX to Houston then Brownsville. Leave Thursday at midnight, get there at around 10am.

Best Western Fiesta Isle is $26 a night for a room with 2 queen beds and free continental breakfast.

I am curious how much Hatteras works as a comparison... might head there next year instead.

Phil here's what I found:

$240 tickets from SEA to ORF (Norfolk) - same deal with red-eye from here arriving there at 10AM.

$215 weekly SUV rental (priceline)

And we'll be staying here:

http://www.hatterasrealty.com/book/house.html?User=HATT27518&PMSID=OCEANDUN&Avail=10/15/2005&Stay=007

It's $600/week for 4 bedrooms, but those people turned out to be very willing to milk you on taxes and surcharges so it's going to be more like $800 or 850 for the house.

There are much cheaper places and we don't really need 4 bedrooms, but this one has a hot tub, internet, charcoal grill, etc., plus no stupid bunk beds and no master bedroom to fight for Smile, so I took it.

All in all around $500 total for each of the 4 people going. We might have one or two more persons, it'll bring the price down even more.

Oh yea, the weather forecast looks really sweet so far, but my impression is that SPI has slightly better weather this time of the year. Either way it's a gamble :/

Yep... its a roll of the dice for sure. Last time we got skunked at SPI for all but 2 days. But then the time before that we had wind everyday.

Have fun at Hatteras, make sure to report back here with how it went!

Well I leave tonight, looks like we'll have some wind but maybe a few dead days too. Bringing the xBox so we'll at least have something to do...

C-ya all in a couple weeks!

Full moon prediction was wrong.

Looks like Phillip is getting kinda skunked.
- That sucks.

I'm waiting for the wind to come up before
I go.

Next full moon will be mid November.
Maybe it will be honking everyday by then.

All the hurricanes are messing things up.

SPI was a blast... It was my third time, and I think the most fun yet. Ended up getting on the water all but 2 days, though a lot of that was lightwind kiting on the skimboard. S'OK though because I got my first shuv-it transitions and learned how to really crank upwind on the thing.

For the days on the Hein TT I learned how to smooth out my kiteloops (thanks Lee) and had a few moments riding blind (though they all ended in pretty ugly heelside edge catch crashes.) In fact the 15-20mph days were perfect for learning new stuff, I think pretty much we all progressed in our kiteboarding which is great.

We also progressed in our EA Sports NHL 2005 skills, which with 4 wireless controllers ain't too shabby a way to pass the hours on SPI.

I think we're all stoked enough to return again, maybe in the spring when the stronger winds are more of a sure thing. You just can't beat the uber flat hot tub warm water, smooth wind, and waves too! The trip ends up only costing around $500-$600 per guy after tickets, car, and house rental.

Check out the winds on our last day... and I thought I was crazy for bringing my 7m...
