LMAO I love the PFD!

I saw a guy on Saturday, he had a rash guard, wetsuit, pfd, and a friggin safety jacket on. I thought for a second that he had a hooded sweatshirt on somewhere under all that shit. He looked like he was going to strom the beach at Normandy.

Saw a guy at Stevenson like that, had sunscreen on his lips and nose so thick that his nose and mouth were white, we thought he was wearing a mouth guard, had a board leash, helmet, life jacket, and hooded rashguard that he wore under his helmet (bikers helmet might I add) and a whole family posse was there to back him up. he went out on a 15m fuel or something like that and after 10 min of body dragging came back in and dumped his kite on the grass, his kid stood there looking at it as it rolled back into the bushes and everybody was yelling at him to grab it before it would power up and throw him into the rocks., pretty funny.

fortunately, any average surfing or snowboarding video includes riding that is 10x more impressive and inspiring to watch than almost any kite video. just post up a bunch of those videos, and maybe people will realize they're wasting their time with this sport.

I think you're right. I'll quit kiteboarding too. It's too much like driving.
If you tailgate someone too close and they slam on the brakes--who's fault is it? However in kiteboarding--
we TRY to realize what rotation is going on and that's what we rely on--- we are all doing it together-- and usually on the same piece of water.
As kiters-- we have to be on the same page, sometimes I screw it up-- BUT I think the best thing to do is to tell me on the spot.
If I'm not too Drunk I'll remember.

Plus its too dangerous:

I'm still waiting for the kite rage rider to pull the Chinese fighting kite maneuver. put glue on the lines then cover them with glass. Someone pinches you....there goes their kite Wink That or a rocket kite to blast over them.

I've bitched a lot on this forum looking for people to help regulate... Nothing ever comes of bitching here. If you want to see changes you need to contact the CGKA and be democratic. I know some people don't want to see more rules but this sport is growing, our population of kiters is growing, and something will need to be done soon enough. Discouraging people won't work (discussion for another thread).

I haven't posted any bitching lately and that's because just about all of my problems have been solved simply by avoiding the sandbar on weekends.

There have been a couple of guys who come up right downwind of me;i'm talking 25 feet or less and just stay there. WTF I can't jump, turn, and have to watch very carefully what they are going to do. Eventually they have turned.

My rule is to anticipate what the person in front of my is going to do. Up by the bridge this is easy. Most folks go for some downwind wave slashing then head back up.

If somebody is so close to me that I am inspecting their kite I get the hell out of the way regardless of right of way. I have yelled, "You are too close!" at a couple of people this summer.

Bottom line is that if something does go wrong ROW is going to be the last thing on your mind if you or somebody else gets hurt.

Try to kite as far away from folks as possible. When passing drop or raise your kite. Don't be a dick and pinch up down wind.

Look before you jump and or turn.

When you are around a bunch of windsurfers always look over your shoulder to make sure they are not approaching you from behind.

DBAD Very Happy

or much else going on
right then.

Kiting is a lot like sailing, but its obviously different. I don't think that just because it's a wind sport means sailing rules blindly apply.

My rules go like this:
1) From at least 100 yards away allow the other kiter a chance to make the first move. Most of the people that don't know how to pass but are trying to be courteous will give way. Suckers!

2) Once I'm about 75 yards away: If I think I can make it upwind of someone with at least 20 or 30 feet to spare I'll go upwind of them bringing my kite fairly high allowing them room to sin their kite if they need... Bringing my kite high and slowing down is only fair when someone else has to loose ground because of me. Otherwise I dive my kite low and head downwind to make it obvious that's what I'm going to do.

3) If heading down wind and have made a proper acknowledgment that the person is going upwind, I then lay back on my edge and try to save as much ground as possible.

4) I extend my hand for a high-five as I pass.

For me It has nothing to do with sailing rules or who is traveling with their right foot forward. It's about being proactive from a good distance, making my intentions obvious, and ALWAYS looking before I turn.

yep Forrest all that and more

But have to disagree about the sailing thing
kiting IS for sure SAILING
boats have been using kites for many years (Spinnakers)
In a court of law the international and local maritime laws are in effect.

courtesy IS the best policy
kiters could learn a lot about this from sailors
not the agro I gotta win at everything kind of sailors

There were sailboat races going on during the blowout and KB4C, and everyone managed to get along by following the established rules of maritime law.

I know Mark went so far as to yell 'starboard" at a sailboat in KB4C, and they gave way.

It would be easy if there was an entrance exam for ALL water users
the State of Oregon now has a program for Mandatory boater safety
I would suggest that everyone here take it
I passed on the second try
and evryone knos how dumb i am
seriously
there is some good info on right-o-way

I wouldn't hold my breath for that one. The more established "rule" of the day was the largest boat rules.

Was fun playing chicken with em:

"really, I am on starboard tack"

" You know, you really should yeild"

" Hey, I'm not kidding"

"Mommy! Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"

" OK you win."

Did also enjoy Pacific Highs interpretation of the rules - when overtaking a flailing kiter - best to ram the flailing kite full-on to knock some wind back into it. Laughing Laughing

Always thought the Cigar smoking cartoon crows set the best example:

"No, after you"

"Please, after you"
