I give out bad advice.

OK, so I'm doing some private windsurf jibe lessons and I need to see if I can still jibe. I rig my 4 and head out in 16 to 35 mph wind at Dougs.
Here are my observations on windsurfing:
Windsurfing
1. Way to much stuff to carry. I was tired and no where near going out. Dougs is a long walk and haul. 10min. even though I had good parking spot 5 cars from opening.
2. Rigged sail: 10 min.
3. Put on wet suit: 10min.
4. Pulled board out of bag insert sail:10min.
5. Walked to water: 5min.
6. Wind was north waited for a gust to get out 5 min.
Total time prior to actual play time: 40 minutes!!
Kiteboarding
1. Got to spit at 8:30am and parked at the event site.
2. Put wet suit and got kite and board out: 10 min.
3. Walked to spit and pumped up kite: 10min.
4. Walked lines and hooked up kite: 10min.
5. Asked a dude to launch my kite: 2min.
6. Kited til overpowered 1 hour.
Total time elapsed til play time was 30 min.
My conclusion is that windsurfing takes too much effort.
What are your thoughts NWkite freaks?

You should have rigged bigger.
I launched from Rowena on my 5.7m2 sail, then sailed down to Doug's for an impromptu photo shoot with Windsurf mag.
The 5.7 was hairball overpowered, but was sweet for heading downwind of Doug's and riding the surf point.
Sailed for about 4 hours with some friends visiting from Florida and then headed back up to Rowena completely wound up the whole way.
Do have to agree on the physical effort comparison. Windsurfing is way more physical than kiting, at least at the level that I kite at.
Looking forward to getting on my new REV kite over the weekend and saving the windsurf gear for proper windy days.

Do you really have to ask? how many windsurfers do you see take to the air on an average day? |

Of course you would draw that conclusion. Get the lead out and you'll be in the water in 10-15 minutes, like me
Seriously, 10 minutes to take a board out of a bag and connect it to the rig??? 10 minutes to put on a wetsuit???

| So how far are you walking to do all this, because if it takes you 10 min to pull theboard out of its bag and attach it to your sail there must be 9.5 min of walking to the sail involved. I can deffinitely rig a sail faster than i can kite. both only take mabye 15 min for me to get on the water. However I would deffinitely rather have the wind die on me while i'm windsurfing, much better to paddle across the river with. |

That you probably suck @ windsurfing?
I'm just the oppposite; I can rig a sail and get on the water within 15 minutes regardless of the location.
Kiting takes me 45 if not more.......but then I suck @ kiting!
Both are still the funnest sports ever ( in summer)! |

Wed Sep 05, 07 12:15 pm OK, so i haven't rigged a windsurfer in a while but.... |
|

Man I'm addicted to kiteboarding! On the other hand I do like to windsurf, but it does take longer to rig. Sure if I race I can rig really fast, but it's heavier:
Windsurfing:
Board 14lbs.
Rig with boom 13lbs.
Kiteboarding:
Board 5lbs.
Kite 13lbs. and really small
I can rig my kite and have it in the air at the spit in about 15mins. and that is slow. I take my time and look at the conditions.
I gotta tell ya that I still like the feel of a windsurfer under my feet with a 4 meter at dougs. I was out of control for a solid 20mins. I can sail better than most of the folks at Dougs so don't assume that I'm a newb windsurfer. I'll gladly duck jibe and or jump over you if I get the chance. Bring it on!
What keeps me kiting is that it really is easier than windsurfing. Now keep in mind that I'm 40's and my BMI is 29% and I'm bald. However, I like to take big jumps and land like a little butterfly. I'm talking 10feet 20, and yes 30 feet. Do that on a windsurfer and you are going to feel it. Do it on a kite and it's butter baby.
Windsurfing is great and i love it, but kiting is my favorite.

I still windsurfed a little untill I tried a directional kiteboard in the swell that really killed the last bit of my windsurfing urge. |
