I think it might be to prevent backstall... but who knows!
actually, i wonder if the wind passing over the vent makes some sort of vacuum and keeps it closer to the edge of the wind window?

Nate and I discussed this a while back in this thread
I've been wanting to add some vents to a 5m
Fuel for some time. Even got some material.
They've been doing it with high wind stunt kites
for some time.
Anyone got an 05 or 06 5 M Fuel for Sale? I'd
prefer an 05 since I already have one that I can
use a baseline.
I think this might be the key to making manageable
small C kites 5m and down.

its no different than the gap between an airplane's wing and fully extended flaps, keeps the wing from stalling under high angle of attack by allowing a small amount of air onto the top of the wing to sustain smooth airflow.

Florian, are you an ME? And did you take that pic? If so, I thought your tray tables were supposed to be in their upright and locked position, along with all of your electronic devices in their off position (they can never just say that you need to turn them off ).
727? MD-80? I can't see any wing engines!
