Bottom line is that there is some education that needs to take place. It's not going to anybody anygood to act like windsurfers are not there!

This issue needs to be addressed by us kiteboarding folks for sure. If we wait around and don't call people on unsafe shit we will lose the battle. The Hatch is a big stage viewed by the world. Behavior of a few will reflect on and impact the rest of us like it or not.

Anarchy won't cut it!

If you read the above post you will see some really agro stuff mixed in with some basic misuderstandings of kiteboarders and the ROW stuff that windsurfers hold very dear.

There major issue is not knowing how to pass and they freak at the sight of lines. If CGKA made some kind of attempt to educate windsurfers it would be a really great proactive opportunity to educate windsurfers who could then police and or call someone on less than good kiting/windsurfing behavior.

I know that most guys are not at the hatch. Why kite with a million Windsurfers when you can just go a little bit down to the bridge, or up wind too???

Check this really reasonable post from the above thread:

Some of you are out for blood, I understand being angry cause something doesn't go your way and its easy to place blame on kiters. I think some of the opinions here are due to lack of education about kiting. Thanks to those of you who know how to share.

First, kiters who make it to the hatch from the downwind launch have already proved their at least competent in riding and turning. It's a lot of work to get up there from the Sandbar and it's not something a beginner can do. I don't know any kiters who actually launch from the hatch, its at least not documented anywhere I've seen as a possibility.

Second, Kiters raise their sails when other water users are passing down wind of them to the point of the kite being straight above their head and loosing all speed. Most kiters know when they can and can't make it upwind of another kiter/WS. If you see a kiter lean back you know they're going to try and make it upwind of you, if you see them lean forward they're going to try and make it down wind of you. Pretty common practice and most kiters can share a relatively small space.

Third, if a kiter crashes his kite on you and you get tangled you should consider this worst case scenario and consider cutting the lines if you can't get them off you. Fortunately, lines under load are straight and do not wrap around anything. You will most likely be fine but your mast will probably take the worst hit. If the kiter doesn't write you a check, looks like you're the owner of a new kite, take lessons. If the situation is bad enough you probably won't have time to react. Ditched WS gear can destroy people too. The risk is always there.

Jumping is one of the first skills a kiter will learn and most kiters know how much room they need and would never think of jumping with anyone down wind of them. It's pretty common practice to get downwind of another kiter by doing a quick jump so don't freak if a kiter does this. Though, I can't see the point of doing all that hard work to get up to where the swell is so good and then spending all your time 30 feet above the water...

A beginner kiter can be spotted a mile away with their stink-bug ass out stance.

I'm curious about confirmation of Isobar's report of a kiter killing a windsurfer. Can anyone confirm this?

Also curious about the report of a kiter harassing people at the Hatch on Sunday. Can anyone confirm this as well? "

There you have it,

Idea

The Kiteboarder killing a windsurfer allegation is bogus... there has never been a non kiting-bystander killed by a kiteboarder ever worldwide. There have been a few incidents of a non kiting-bystander being hurt or even sent to the hospital though. All the cases I have ever heard of were accidents involving people on the beach though.

If you google for Rick Iossi and KSI you can find good info on all the major accidents.

Education my ass. Yea, I'm sure if you talked to this guy and made him realize that he was negatively effecting the feeling of others, he would stop all that naughty behavior.

If someone needs a beat down, then stand up and give him a beat down. Go key the living shit out of his car, throw sugar in the gas tank, or smear dogshit on all the door handles. Don't just sit there and be openly disrespected and then run home, get online and cry like a baby about it. For fuck sake people, grow some fucking balls.

On another note, I think I might run for a public office.

In regards to kiter disrespect on Sunday, I saw a bit of the action. We were coming through on a downwinder and I watched the guy on a blue Cabrinha kite clad in boardshorts only making a real scene. It was actually quite embarassing. It was very crowded so we quickly cruised through. There should be no tolerance for this behavior.

i watched that guy for an hour at the hatch, board shorts- no shirt- kinda sandy blond hair- maybe mid/late twenties to early thirties...since i have yet to fly a kite, or spend one second doing anything but watching, i did not know this behavior was out of line......but this guy was catching air, close to shore, i never saw him cause any ws to crash, and nobody i saw paid him any special attention......hesitate to post with zero street or wind cred but that's what i saw...stirring the pot on my first post...hope this doesn’t offend as i registered to solicit advise and get the low down, not stick my nose in
