From the Port of Hood River :

Happy July! We have a busy weekend ahead of us and I have a few things to share.

The Event Site kite launch/land pad will close on Friday, July 1st for the remainder of the summer for safety concerns due to crowds. When the sandbar is underwater the beachgoers have no where to go so that forces too many people in the Event Site Park for safe launching and landing of kites. This may pose a challenge to kiters if the water remains high.

The Port will bring in several large dumpsters and additional port-a-potties that will be located across the waterfront for the 4th.

WATER QUALITY: The Port received notice yesterday, Sunday June 26th, the Hook, Waterfront Park, The Event Site and Nichols Basin all met quality met relevant water quality standards. The warning signs have been taken down. The Riverkeepers Swim Guide does not yet reflect this, hopefully they will get it updated today. https://www.theswimguide.org/beach/1580

THE SPIT: The Lions Club Eye Openers host the fireworks. Access to the SPIT will be closed to the public and concessions starting Sunday morning, July 3rd, and remain closed until Tuesday morning July 5th. Kite the Gorge will temporarily relocate to the Marina Beach Park.

PORT WATERFRONT PARKING Monday, July 4th:
The Event Site parking lot and the Jensen West parking lot will be open to Annual Passholders and pay-to-park customers.
The Event Site lot entrance gate will close at the regular time, 10pm.
Port on-street parking will be free
Lot #1 will be free
No overnight camping on Port Property
As always, the Marina Beach, Spit and Hook are free to park and will be open the regular hours for access

The Port Office will be closed on Monday, July 4th.
If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to reach out.

Thanks everyone! Have a great holiday.

Another great reason to take up winging - if you haven't already.

All the more reason to demolish the old outdate Lure-Jenson building and extend the water front park. It is know fact that quality recreation facilities attract high paying jobs. Hood River and White Salmon-Bingen have already benefited from the influx of wind crazed newcomers to the area. The port has vacant land all over the county to build industrial building to replace the Lure-Jenson buildings. By creating a large open space waterfront park the land and the current buildings located behind the park will only increase in value.

More important is the incredible waterfront park that the area would have for all to use in safe, fun manner. It would truly became the crown jewel for Hood River.

Wouldn't it be neat if they built a swimming pool across the road from the event site?
Let Hood River Parks and Rec run it. Safe and fun for the kidos while parent(s) are out having a session.

All the best,
Hein

Thanks. I shared this in facebook groups. Some people (tourists) will definitely want to launch.

A kiting tourist here. So to clarify will there still be kiting or does that mean there will be no access to kiting at or around the event site? Thanks N

No access and no kiting. Most likely there will be folks to watch for this. You don’t want to kite on a crowded beach anyways. Even this week was incredibly hard to launch and land. And so many kids around. If anything happened…

Go to local shops and ask around for other spots.

Is wing foiling allowed at the event sire this weekend? Or is that included in kiting?

Why is the river level still so high? We haven't gotten much precipitation for weeks and I can't imagine snow melt is sustaining this high of a level for so long.... Is there something TD dam is doing to influence this?

Just curious really

Deep snowpack between Mt Hood and the Canadian BC interior. All of the tributary rivers between here and the headwaters of the Columbia are running high due to spring precipitation, full lakes and now the eventual melting snowpack.
Highwater will run well into the middle of July and could last longer depending on how quickly or slowly the snowmelt occurs in each of the different mountain regions.
All of the dams have been mostly open at full throttle all spring to prepare for this incoming water flow.
