Tue Jul 13, 21 10:33 am OT: Offshore Clatsop Spit SUPfoil/wing foil downwinder |
|
|
Fished the ocean this past weekend outa Illwaco, and while out in the salty waters, I couldn't help thinking about what an epic foil downwinder could do with boat support. Has anyone done that? I'm thinking the coasties who fish and know the area better than mere ditch dwellers. The logistics that I haven't thought-of...gotta be a long list, including I'm no where near skilled enough to attempt, but as a carrot in the future, maybe. |

Not to pooh-pooh your dream, but...
There are a couple of stalwart watermen in Newport (they're not wind johnnies, though) who, back in the day, used to paddleboard from Depoe Bay to South Beach during windy summer conditions when the surf had achieved terminal boredom.
No support boat, no foils, no paddles even (they used prone paddleboards 'cuz they roll old-school)... These OGs generated lots of chatter on iFish and among the recreational salmon & rockfish fleet as they paddled south, the subject of many tales about folks spotting a "surfer lost at sea" from that era.
Water bottle, compass, and handheld radios were all of the support they had.
And yes, they do complain about "kids these days" and think everybody's a buncha kooks!
