Smartest easiest thing to do is roll the logs into the river, and let a boat tow them out into the current and release.
Now, there may be some resistance to this, but we are returning the logs from whence they came, so I think itโs legit. |

Sand DUNES "over" sand bars!
Think before you REMOVE valuable features that PREVENT the sand from eroding. Help nature BUILD the sandbar HIGHER by manipulating wind and water erosion.
Think Snow fence not scrape and burn.
Large logs should be buried to create substrate footing for wind breaks, micro wind shadows lead to deposition of migrating, windblown sand. Instead of denuding the beach it is wise to situate large logs to be buried under drifted sand. Granted, shoveling of sand onto the logs is not as fun as 4x4's, tow straps & chain saws.
A one time glacial burst delivered this "park". Erosion is drastically reducing it's size. The REMAINING outline of the sandbar is for some "magical" reason a floor plan secured by prominent, natural anchoring features buried logs, root balls and rocks.
Sand dunes ten years later:
IF these ideas were employed when first introduced here (5/6/2011) those past ten years would have resulted in self propagating & diverse-
1. -sand dunes instead of an eroding floodplain
2. -a sweet low altitude leeward wind shadow zones for:
A. -parking a kite
B. -a flat water skim board pond
C. -sanctuary and family friendly shoreline
D. -year around elevated view point sunrise-sunset sanctuary
E. -multiple utility & activities within a safely divided landscape
Let's take a hint from nature.

Kmun - thanks for the input.
We try to only remove the logs sitting on the surface. We leave the ones that are already buried/partially buried.
We also consulted with Hood River Watershed group to get their input.
I welcome you to help with planning and execution next year. We need all the help we can get. |

Many thanks to the over 40 volunteers who showed up yesterday to relocate tons of driftwood at The Hood River Sandbar to make for safer kite launching and landing and for the benefit of all we share the space with. Special thanks go to Laird Davis for organizing the effort! Great job everybody! ๐
