Press Release
11 June 2007
Hood River, OR

The Community Education Kite Series kicked off last Friday night with decent wind and a very nice mix of experience levels. From 1st year sailors to 10 year veterans, the low key race series challenged everyone and provided a fun setting for each participant to improve their kite-racing technique.

12 year old Levi Roeseler started off the Junior program, and then he jumped into the safety chase boat to rabbit start the adults and provide backup support. Former pro David Tyburski nailed the 6:25pm start to jump out to an early lead on a skim board in the adult heat, but Rod Parmenter and Ken Winner edged hard to chase him down. 2nd year kiter Ryan Goodwin finished well after a late start on the upwind/downwind course. From the large wood pile to the channel marker off Wells Island and back, the fading evening wind forced all riders to dig into their bags of tricks to make it safely back to the sandbar.

After completing the circuit in well under an hour, Ken Winner said, “It’s fun to see what you can do, even when the conditions aren’t perfect”.

Organizer Cory Roeseler is hoping this Friday night series will grow, especially with the juniors, as more proficient local kiters are looking for more ways to push their riding to new levels. Skippers meetings are at 5:30pm at the ramp leading to the sandbar each Friday night.

For more details, contact Cory Roeseler (541) 490-7649

Right on Cory! These race nights are super fun. I had never raced before and got in on one of the Tuesday night series last year. I would encourage anyone interested to go for it!

Very Happy

Actually, I'm looking for feedback/recommendations regarding the types of racing people want. The first night was intentionally kept simple: 2 mile long upwind/downwind.

Other ideas:

short/tight upwind/downwind with multiple laps
figure 8 slalom with multiple laps
delta-dashing with at least one leg upstream to a bouy inside the Hood River
100m speed course

Your input is welcome! Courses to be announced at skippers meeting each Friday night at 5:30, weather permitting.
