Sun Jun 03, 07 3:59 pm keeping my kite in the car |

Is it bad to keep my kite and board in my car during the day while I'm at work? Right now I go home to pick it up and then drive out to wherever (SI most likely). I Would like to save the 45 min trip to be out there 45 min earlier. Is it bad to keep this stuff in a hot summer car for a few hours? (Aside from the potential of it being stolen of course). I was thinking the trunk would be a good spot. |

keep kite out of direct sunlight. If you keep your struts inflated then they have the possabilaty of blowing up(hot air expanding in bladder). trunk is a good spot for avoiding heat. I keep most of my things in the car but if i know it is going to be super hot then i try to keep it all out of my car. if i know that i am going to ride that afternoon... why would i waste the kiting time of driving home to get my stuff then to the site. i could kite that much longer. |

depends on which brand of kite you own. if you have slingpops then your sure to have the valves delam once the temps rise more than 80F and the inside of the car heats up. actually it seems like most brands are having that issue, especially the 06 models. haven't heard about the 07's. even if you leave your kite inflated sitting in the hot sun (in places like texas, baja, etc) you run the risk of delaming the weld seams.
you'd be better served parking in a garage or shade at the least. or bring it in to work...but then that makes your sly exit out the back door even more difficult.
just screw work! |

You probably do more damage having them pumped up at the beach then sitting in your car. Constant flapping in the wind and direct sunlight is bad.
Heat is bad for anything. Since inside of cars get to 120 degress plus on a sunny day. Direct sunlight is even worse, but your kites are probably in your bags so this won't have much effect.
My 04 SS did have the blader issues, but this was addressed by SS.
I have my 06 SS in my car all the time and have not seen any effects.
Not sure if a trunk gets any less hot then the inside cabin area.
Best bet, if your not using them, take them out, if it means driving an extra 45min, leave them in the car.
I do not think heat in your car would have much effect on your board. |

Back when I flew the 04 fuels, the adhesive used to bond the nozzles to the bladders had issues from heat that caused the glue to fail. Slingshot was very good about responding to this problem and the upgraded bladders have never been an issue.
Regarding the quality of the rest of the kite...bomber construction.

Just keep the car running with the AC on-- after all if it saves you 45min on the water who cares about a little green house gas emisions. |

Don't leave them pumped up it weakens the bladders and valves no matter what you fly. I leave my kites in the truck, dry and deflated ready to go. You'll be fine.
