Anyone have experience with the foil. I recently got one for a steal, took it out and felt extremely unstable on it, had some wonderfully violent crashes. It felt like it would either want to be all the way up or all the way down. Eventually was able to ride a bit fully foiled but had tons of trouble trying to slowly come up and down. Is this all part of the learning curve, or are there much easier foils to learn on? I will eventually want to get a nice foil, but dont want to trash a nice foil in the learning stage

took me a lot of time to learn on older LF foil and fish. I was having the same trouble. I cut mast down to 28 inches (very helpful less up/down travel) and bought stringy wings. I used a 12inch mast for a week also. Thing that helped me was actually being a little over powered and flying the kite over head. Gives you vertical lift and is pretty neutral. Very suttle hand over the front of board to keep foil from breaching. Once it breaches its going back down too fast to recover. good luck only go out in clean wind. gusty wind will slay you!

Learning to foil can be quite violent . In the early days in was common to see people wearing in hockey gear and caged helmets.

A bigger , floaty board , a shorter mast and a large wing will make your learning much more enjoyable.

There were a couple companies that put out foils (2015-2016)that were basically the original Liquid Force foil. Naish’s first year, maybe Cabrina too.

I struggled with the LF original foil at my weight, 205 lb.

I made good progress with 12” mast, and spent a long time with a 24” mast. But that wing needs a bit of speed at my weight, and it’s quick to rise. Breaching means an instant nose dive. At slow speeds it was prone to stalling, and any turns at low speeds stalled. Maybe this one works better for lighter, or more accomplished riders.

The LF rocket foil or whatever they called the original, is 860 cm2.
In today’s foils, that’s a medium size, low aspect, 3.5 ratio

Foils have come a long way in a short time. Wings have gotten larger, lighter and more forgiving.

Jumping up to a bigger wing set, the impulse, at 1126 cm2 was night and day.
It’s easy to ride at slow speeds, has great glide and is forgiving of most foolishness. I wish I’d made the move to a bigger wing sooner, it would have saved a lot of frustration.

The impulse bolts right on the LF fusilage.

Try a bigger wing for more riding and less bucking.

Once everything clicks, I plan on trying smaller, faster wings like the thruster and happy foil. But I’ll need to be comfortable and confident at higher speeds.

Thanks for the input all. I have part of next week off and am planning to come up to the Gorge and hammer out 4 days of focused riding... if it does not stick, I may try to get rid of the double agent and go with one of the bigger more modern slingy set ups. Btw Im about 180, and i have had that issue of nothing going on as im riding, and all of a sudden the thing wants to stand at attention like a horny teenager looking at play boy
