In doing so you will be assured
a vote when this issue comes up
for one during the next meeting. |
Before I join the CGKA, I have a few questions.
- what is the mission of the CGKA?
- What benefits does the CGKA bring (i.e. what do I get for my money?) If I don't kite on the sandbar, is there any reason to join?
- is the CGKA a democracy? It didn't sound like it from the previous CGKA posts.
- will our votes make a difference in the CGKA decisions? Again, it didn't sound like it from the previous CGKA posts.
- will our votes make a difference in the port decisions?
these are honest questions, I'm not trying to be an antagonist here. I just would like to know what lies behind a membership. |

I think you'll have to join on faith,
come to the meeting and make
your questions heard before the
board and the membership.
It's only $10
I'm pretty sure the board will
be compelled to represent the
desires of the majority regardless
of their individual viewpoint.
That does not mean that the Port
won't deny our requests. We do
have rights and should not be treated
unfairly but the Port still has the power
to make what ever decree that they
see fit. |

They are in the best position to
bring this issue before the Port.

I do appreciate the CGKA, however, I was asking a legitimate question. Is the CGKA the only way we can be heard? Are there other avenues? |

You could always attend the Port meetings yourself. Though from what's been said, I think the Port would rather see us as one voice than many. |

For those of us who can't ride due to some lame boss - we do the next best thing - talk about riding |

bitching about not being able to pump up your kites on the grass does not count as talking about riding |

Go back and read my posts thoughout the thread - I have not advocated pumping up my kites on the grass. |

sorry, i did not mean to single you out, i was just making a generalization about the topic and did not believe this thread constituted talking about riding which is why i quoted you.
I am there with you, lame work responsibilities that prevent me from riding....
Also i do believe the CGKA is the first and only organization to represent kiters in the Gorge. |

No worries man. The CGKA does represent the kiters in the gorge - I just wanted to know all of the avenues that Kiters can be heard. |

Just a couple of thoughts... first off, this issue isn't a problem yet. I saw a guy pumping up on the grass at the Event Site on Sunday, it was quiet and no one hassled him about it. The comment made earlier that giving a small section of the east end of the Event Site over to kiting for use of pumping up kites would not represent a loss to windsurfers is partially incorrect. It wouldn't make a difference now, but just wait until June, and July?... forget about it.
Some people obivously just don't realize how busy it gets, but believe me, I've had to rig right beside the east end chain link fence and could barely pick a path to get past all the boards and sails. While windsurfers are going to launch from the west end of the Event Site this year, they'll still use the whole beach to get to the water, and there will be days when a spot on the grass is at a premium.
Kiters advocating for some Event Site real-estate could be putting setting up an awkward situation later. Keep in mind, we really don't know how this new geography is going to play out, and won't know until the summer crowds come. Right now the rule is no windsurfing from the sandbar. But, if kiters push for part of the Event Site now, it could come back to haunt them if windsurfers start using the sandbar as a learning area. At least with the way things stand now, kiters can say "hey, we have our spot you have yours" if that happens. But if kiters push for part of the Event Site, windsurfers are going to have a valid arguement to say "ok, then we're allowed to launch from the spit".
I still say the best solution is to develop a "kite only" site with a community that is willing. Sucks if you live in the Hood and want to kite on your home turf, but look at Bingen, the area is huge and hardly used. Stevenson also seems to have secured the point as a "kite only" area, though I know some windsurfers launch there occasionally. |
