that photo with the big ass sandbar sure makes the 600' x 600' no kiting area look pretty small and insignificant..... not that 200 yards is small, the photo just makes it look like it is.

Interesting image.
Who's the brains behind the sandbar work party May 19th? Let's please take a study of those log piles and come up with a game plan for our chainsaw work.
Cut it all up and remove? Drag, Winch, and Bind the large stuff into a hummock? Can we cut up and toss floaters into the river? Or is it going to be a long carry for all that crap.
Will we have permission to drive 4X4 out there to help with some loads?
I will arrive with work supplies, but I hope we have some good direction on what exactly we're doing that morning.

The CGKA is looking into all aspects of the sand bar clean up. We are in contact with the powers that be, and firm plans will be announced once we confirm that water levels are going to be low enough for a 05/19 cleanup and we have a solid grasp on what we can and cannot do.

Details to follow

it's kind of a shame to move it all... there's a natural wind barrier there right now that creates a sweet shallow pool on the eastern side with flatness...

@Wylie: That's why I posted this image when I found it. It's a good map to draw a plan of attack on. I had originally volunteered to spearhead the effort with ShredJim's leadership but then work decided I should goto Europe from April 29th to May 16th. So, I'll be there to work on the 19th but it'll be pretty hard for Jim and I to coordinate.

I'm creating a new thread for ideas on the wood...

I have to say that is is sweet to read these posts and see both positive mojo in support of getting the Sandbar cleaned up AND the CGKA posting quick and informative responses!!!!

If we're allowed to drive a vehicle out on the sandbar (is it physically possible?) I'll donate $100 towards the cost of renting a bobcat for the day. I think the cost is around $200 - $300 a day. Not sure if we'd need the track type or the wheel type.

We get back from SPI on the 18th but we should be able to be out there on the 19th to help.

You bet! Linda from the port is working with the Corps of Engineers to tell me if May 19 is going to be the day, ie if they will drop the water low enough for us to have a productive work party. If not May 19, we should get an alternate Saturday - at least we hope! The way I look at it, if someone from the Corps wants to use a barge or something to keep the wood in the river thats fine - as long as they don't put the wood at Wells Island or some other place we all ride. If not we need to figure out a way to move it and either make something out of it or BURN it. Did someone say roasted hotdogs? Shay or I will make a posting as soon as we hear what day it will be. Then we will begin the rally process. Its gonna take a bunch of people to do this successfully in one day!

hmm, my dad has a bobcat, i'll have to ask him how much he'd rent it for, probably less than what you'd pay renting it from a rental center.

I agree, and if we take away all the wood whats to say that part of the sandbar doesn't just wash away. Maybe a happy medium would be to make the wooded area more safe by removing the jutting sticks and trees, but leaving some wood there to protect the new honey hole.

one more thing... this diagram doesn't show where boats are allowed.

last year, with the tiny sandbar that existed, it was hard to use it because a friggin boat (the same boat over and over and over) was parked on it.

to shredjim, sherry, and any others on the cgka/port, could a valid 'boat parking' spot be added?

thanks!!!

We can't use any automated equipment like bobcats, backhoes etc. We will be lucky if we can use 4x4's like we did last year. Leaving some wood might help to keep some structure to the sandbar, but it is dangerous. Think of beginners who have their kite drop and catch their lines, bad news - or if the water comes up a bit and you jump off your board thinking you were going to hit sand.....

it pisses me off when i look at that map and only see NO KITEBOARDING zones. Where are the No Windsurfing zones, why do windsurfers have more of a right to launching in certain areas then we do? Why are we having the kiters launching closer to were pedestrians are going to be? Shouldnt we be kept away from the marina and its crowds? Why is where we get to launch a huge walk away from where we park? And why do we have to launch close to the "dangerous" current?

is the ramp from the parking lot at an angle to allow any 4wd or just the big trucks? if possible could utility trailers be taken out there and used to load debris?
