Sunny and lighter east winds. Caps out at Rooster today. Get some if you're equipped to deal with the cold waters.

The water level looks pretty high so there will be no beach to launch from meaning drift launch, launching in the parking lot and walking down the stairs or using a boat. Current conditions are for advanced kiters only at Rooster.

The coast guard chart is misleading. Use the 1-10-1 rule. 1 minute to overcome the gasp reflex, 10 minutes til exhaustion, 1 hour til hypothermia. Hypothermia can be delayed with a wetsuit; exhaustion is only mitigated with flotation ( wetsuit, PFD, surfboard, inflated kite).

In other words, cold water fatalities are usually exhaustion-related drowning before hypothermia.

FYI, the most recent non-drowning, river-immersion, hypothermia fatality in the Columbia River Gorge was during month of August (sit on top kayaker).
