PostThu Apr 12, 07 11:58 pm    Good news for the sandbar - May 19th cleanup? Reply with quote

Today at a sandbar committee meeting at the Port, I was told we have preliminary approval for our CGKA driven clean up of the wood on the sandbar Exclamation Saturday May 19th looks like the best day so we avoid the chance the Hood River dumps more wood after we clean it up, but before Memorial weekend season kickoff. Every participant will need to sign a release of liability sheet we will coordinate. We now have permission to use chainsaws, and I am working on a one-time use of 4X4 vehicles (not tractors or backhoes, etc.) to pull logs to make a big pile to ignite. It seemed to work great last year when we moved about 10 ton of rocks. Last year our rock moving cleanup effort greatly improved the ease of kite line launching and landing. This year the guy on the project from the Corp of Engineers is also working on a deal with SDS lumber to use their barge and then he can re-locate the wood in the river so it forms fish habitat, instead of us burning it - which everyone now agrees has to happen at least a little. At our CGKA meeting last Sat night Forrest who you all know from this forum has greatfully agreed to help me with organizing the clean up project! Any other volunteers would be greatly appreciated! We will need a LARGE croud to do this successfully in one effort, so I hope we can count on a large number of the people who read this to rally all their kiteboard friends to join up on the effort! Last year kicked .........

Count me in! Maybe I can procure an old chainsaw off of craigslist between then and now. You know if you were at the Sauvies cleanup last year, they really do make the work go 100 times faster.

Someone suggested at the CGKA meeting that maybe we just cleave the jutting branches off of a few of the logs and leave the rest in the ground. This might be a good idea for the bigger logs that are 75% buried. Also it could help ensure that the sandbar remains intact and doesn't erode on us.

DON'T LET THEM PUT THE DEAD-HEADS IN THE SHALLOWS NEAR WELLS ISLAND!!! Or at the mouth of the Klick. Those are my two requests.

Any other ideas on where the stumps should not be placed?

How about across from the Hatchery?

This may become one of these "not-in-my-backyard" issues. Hopefully, this issue will be given due consideration by both the biologists and the recreationalists, before the logs are towed anywhere.

Awesome, approval rocks.

I have a 4x4 vehicle as well. For the really large logs I was thinking we don't necessarily have to use the vehicles to pull the logs as much as they'd make excellent counter weight for a come-along.

We should use any of the really nice logs:
-Building a sandbox for kids just at the bottom of the pathway from the parking lot.
-Making a few more benches in the parking lot.
-Split one and make a natural slider!!! Smile
-Maybe a little dock for shooting pictures?

Bunch of ideas, anyone else? Obviously, I think the only decent idea above is the sand box for the kids, and benches, the rest of them are just random ideas.

Those are great ideas.

A chainsaw or three will make fast work of the logs. Then we wont need 4x4 rigs. Unless we want to make benches.

Speaking of which I have both a 4x4 and a chainsaw.
(hope the agro fisherman ala sauvies wont be there) Laughing

it's actually a lot of fun if you can believe it. I encourage everyone to come out and make a big kite communion.

should we invite the windsurfers? might be a good time to start coming together.

i can't wait to get some of that gnarly ass mess cleaned up off the sandbar. I'll be there, thanks for all the hard work jim.

I think elvis brings up a good point about inviting the windsurfers? anybody else have any thoughts on this? i was thinking they might not like us bending the rules for the cleanup, but other than that, any extra help can and will be appreciated.

I can bring a good chain saw. I also have lots of chain hoists and come-a-longs.
Question: How big is this stuff? Is there any heavy stumps embedded into the sand? Will we need any heavy rigging, or is it all hand carry once it's sawed up?

I will leave my stopper balls at home.

Wylie,

There are some big logs, I don't know that we're going to be able to do anything about logs that are submersed, just seems a little dangerous and we'll have to evaluate those on a case by case bases. Anything we can't move, we can mark with a buoy.

We will need chains, ropes, straps, whatever. I figure some of the logs we can tie a big rope to and get 20 or so guys to pull it.
