My neighbor at work has a 5 gallon propane tank that he has put a pressure valve on. He fills it from his air compressor and drags it around to fill up tires ect. Not sure how many kites it would fill.

We can figure that one out... PV=nRT Wink
Just need to know what kind of volume there is in a standard kite's bladders.

Sherry is not with the CGKA she's with the Port. If there is issue with what the CGKA negotiated it needs to be taken up with them.

It doesn't make sense for us all to jump on Sherry, we need to make sure we have some consensus within the CGKA first.

I think we're long overdue for a public CGKA meeting, maybe we can call on the leaders to put one together?

What about the point in Bingen, nice grass, add a few tons of sand, and it's dynamite. Downwinders to Mosier.

Tom Stevenson and the Best Western might be interested (Stevenson Lumber, town of Stevenson, county of Stevenson) and the port as well, they always wanted to develop that for a wind...... sport resort location. All you need to do is develop that launch and who wouldn't want to stay there.

The other thing is that Klickitat county is the one of the poorest county in the state and get MASSIVE handouts for economic development, a robotic aircraft company/ and Bingen-WS received funds to renovate and build.

The other location that no one talks about invading is Mosiers Rock Creek.

Now what about a floating dock for the Hook, or any where up there?

A shuttle service to S_CR_TS, pickup will be at the event site

Convince the Port of Rufus that it should be the first KITE only Spot, hey wind skippers catch big air, get scared, and toss there gear. There is nothing like getting hit with a windsurfing gear in 30 kt winds. You thought your board and a leash are dangerous, oh yeah, the mast can also break collar bones, nice callus now.

Oh this was about AIR for kites, Napa has a portable airtank for tires, 10 gallons, 125 psi. PV=nRT is for weather, jet engines and Thermo, nRT will be constants in this case, so will be of no use P= k/V, k is a constant. its a pure volume equation. faily simple and very linear. P1V1=P2V2 would be more accurate equation, PV=nRT will tell you how much your pressure will increase as the temp gets higher. so 10 gal at 125 psi, is eqivalent to 1 gal at 1250 psi

a typical kite is at what 6-7 psi, so just figure out the volume of each kite and size, just a little data, and then convert to gallons and you got it.

Remember to be friendly when you pump your kite on the grass.

How about renting the Event Site for a Kite Contest, that is an Event isn't it.

How about a boarder cross series as well.

Everyone talks about organizing, I don't think thats true, its all about ME baby. Take a picture of me, look at me, see my loop, ain't I great, "Just Another Wind Fag", Jeff Smith, Ultronz.

What a ramble, hope I didn't offend too many, Not! I coming to the coast, screw the gorge, always leave wind to go to the coast.

See Ya Soon Troll, barfly, blowhard and the rest of you lucky bastards that live at the coast. Cervesa and Cow, oh so good.

There WILL be a CGKA meeting within the next few weeks, and I encourage all of you to show up and make your voices heard.

This organization was resurected for all of us, and its important to get input from the kiting community as a whole.

Thanks for your patience, and we will post the meeting date and location ASAP.

(Thanks Shay!)

Hey BB - your title fits well!

I have been looking at portable solutions, maybe getting one for the back of my Subaru (they were nice enough to have a OEM trunk mounted 12v adapter.) But the portable solutions look like they push about 1/10 the volume of the big boys.

I think for the air compressor to be worth it you gotta have power and speed... If I could pump it up by hand at the same rate or faster, I'll do that.

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to watts/amps/and volts, that's why I love the feedback from you guys on what is possible.

Another question:

Is there enough room on the "stairs" going down from the parking lot, for people to carry fully inflated kites, without causing a bottleneck?

Also, the bow kite's bridles and pulleys tend to drag and catch on stuff, maybe even tripping up people, who try to scoot past the kite carrier.

Are kiters really as lazy as the majority of Americans? What is so bad about pumping your own kite by hand? Is it really necessary to use limited resources to inflate your play-toy? Ever thought about the resources you already use to drive from pdx to the hood or even rufus for a day of play? Sorry to rant but its f**king redonkulus to invest in a power system to do what we already do in a very effective, low-tech way. I would definately not support any CGKA dollars for such a project.

Has anyone tried one of these?

http://www.powertankmini.com/products/sfID1/21/productID/115

It's the size of a wine bottle and has the inflation capacity of a 22.5 gallon tank at 150 psi. (According to the website.) Easy to carry, simple, reliable.

I'm not sure how many kites you could inflate with one of these, but it shouldn't be hard to find a place to refill them in Portland. Obviously, this isn't a solution for the sandbar in general...

I was waiting for that post... I know I have made the same points when people bring up battery operated pumps.

But the thing is.... high powered air compressors are awesome! Very Happy

If you've used one you know what I am talking about.

Plus I was geeking out on the possibility of a self contained solar powered air pump station. It'd be green and useful. Maybe even have an extra plug hanging off it for people to hook their ghetto (er-gorge) blasters up to. Wink

Sometimes it's about time. If I have 1.5 hours to kite, I'd rather not spend 10 minutes of that pumping up a kite. That said, I would rather see a "green" way of powering a compressor, like a windmill. Realistically, this project probably won't happen, because it's unlikely anyone has the time to make it happen. But, wouldn't it be cool to have a wind powered compressor?

Seriously, this is a great way to knock around new ideas. It's a large community. You'll never know what ideas might work if you don't talk about them. Somebody out there might possess the skills and know how to make it work.

I found this:
http://www.otherpower.com/otherpower_wind.html

it seems pretty easy... and I like this: "he power available in the wind goes up by a factor of 8 as the windspeed doubles."

i wonder if we could talk the port into letting us put up a small windmill.

also, if we had a fund raiser, maybe we could hire hein to make some lightweight composite blades for it.
