Very similar to a mid-90s windsurfer story out at the last Columbia River/Ilwaco buoy... next stop Taiwan. Windsurfer got trapped in dying-dead winds, very strong out-going current, looses board/all. Just barely snags the final buoy (buoy #12?) at the Columbia River bar. Windsurfing buddy is back near Warrenton pre-cell phone era. After hours of near death the friend calls the USCG at Ilwaca Station. It turns out that a Seattle television station was doing a ride-along that day.
Scene on live TV is of this guy curled up in the helicopter crying his eyes out once they hoisted him on-board.
Wish I could find the story. It was big on rec.windsurfing newsgroup back it the day. _________________ CGKA Member

I'm sorry, but people who answered C are kidding themselves. Shit happens when you are out on the water, especially on the coast. The coast guard is there to save lives when things go bad. Should you rely on anyone for a rescue? Of course not, but as a society we have these services in place to save people when things go really wrong. |

B but I would rather rescue myself or get help from a fellow water sport helper. I once broke a mast at the Cut in Chatham during a time when the Coast Guard was trying to shut down access and after rolling up and surfing in found a coast guard rescue boat attempting to intercept me before I got to the beach. They frantically sought to hail me and get me to accept help but I beat them to the beach and ran up the steps with my stuff and escaped. They would have used the "rescue" as an excuse to close down windsurfing at the cut. We all knew this and were able to take care of ourselves so that the authorities had only one rescue that year. |

Nah, in answer B the line "but hope/expect to be rescued"
People who answered C focused on the word expect
People who answered B focused on the word hope
We were all basically saying the same thing
I will do my best to self-rescue or have my friends/other kiters help
Coast guard, etc are the last resort if they are even available |
